Stará Myjava offers several specific highlights to help you plan your trip: a marked cycling route that leads to the reservoir, another route with historical stops, and winter activities around Skiland. Protected areas, the river and the reservoir also shape the landscape. You can therefore first decide whether cycling, water, history or winter sports will define your stay.

Landscape and reservoir

Part of the cadastral area of Stará Myjava lies within the White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area. The protected area of the Myjava River, which is designated a natural monument, also includes part of the cadastral area. The Stará Myjava Reservoir was built on the river within the municipality.

There is also a forestry educational trail with nine information boards at the reservoir. Its focus on forests adds another dimension to the recreational activities by the water. Nature education and various activities at the reservoir are therefore available in the same place.

Cycling the Staromyjavská Greenway

The Staromyjavská Greenway is 15.3 kilometres long, marked in blue and classified as “Recreational.” It connects Myjava, Brestovec, Kadlecovci and Stará Myjava, and leads to the Stará Myjava Reservoir. The route length, markings and classification give you specific guidance when choosing a cycling route, without specifying a walking or cycling time.

Memorial sites along the Krivosudy cycling route

The Krivosudy cycling route leads to the SNP monument and restored partisan bunkers from the Second World War. It then runs through the forest above Skiland Stará Myjava. The underground bunkers in Stará Myjava commemorate the founding of the 2nd Stalin Partisan Brigade and the 1944 Slovak National Uprising. The monument, bunkers and forest section give this route a different focus from the Greenway, which connects places and ends at the reservoir.

Water activities, with one condition

The reservoir is used for bathing, boating, sunbathing and fishing. Swimming is subject to suitable water quality. Keep this condition in mind if bathing or swimming is an important part of your plans; the other activities mentioned offer their own ways to spend time by the water.

Skiland and cross-country skiing in winter

Skiland Stará Myjava is a ski resort in the White Carpathians. Its gentle slope is suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers. Visitor services include artificial snowmaking, night skiing, ski and snowboard equipment rental, ski servicing, parking within the resort and a buffet. As these services may change seasonally, check their availability before you travel.

Another winter option is the 12.6-kilometre Novolhotsko–staromyjavský cross-country ski trail. It runs through Stará Myjava and connects to Czechia. Skiland and the trail offer different activities: a gentle slope with ski services on one hand, and a designated cross-country ski route on the other. Which one suits your trip depends on whether you prefer downhill or cross-country skiing.
