Podkylava combines cycling routes of varying lengths with the rural focus of Biofarma Charolais and a rich local history. A short cycling route and a parallel educational trail lead to the Pávičie viewpoint; other routes range from 7.8 to 45 kilometres. The area also offers connections to farm life, historic agricultural machinery and cultural traditions such as bobbin lace-making and traditional houses. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these themes as separate elements: route choice, agriculture and local history each appeal to different interests.

Routes to the Viewpoint and Cycling Trails

The yellow-marked local cycling route MC01 leads from the road behind the cemetery to the Pávičie viewpoint and is about 600 metres long. A completed educational trail runs parallel between the same endpoints. In Podkylava, Vyhliadka Pávičie is designated as an existing recreational area with development potential. The cycling route and educational trail therefore lead to the same destination but offer two different ways to make the journey.

Longer cycling connections are also part of the picture. The green-marked C5325 runs between Podkylava, Polianka and Sládkovci and is 7.8 kilometres long. The blue-marked C2302 is on a different scale: it runs from Plavecký Peter via Jablonica to Hrachovište and is 45 kilometres in total. The markings, sequence of places and lengths help distinguish these routes. Compared with the approximately 600-metre connection to the viewpoint, the information about C5325 and C2302 gives an overview of considerably longer routes, without combining them into a single route.

Agriculture and Agritourism

Biofarma Charolais is an agritourism facility in Podkylava. It combines organic cattle and horse farming with agritourism and recreation. The farm also has a gallery of historic agricultural machinery and offers horse riding. Agriculture, leisure and historic machinery are distinct aspects of the farm’s profile.

One specific reason to visit is the annual opening of the grazing season. Visitors can learn about life on a farm. If you would like to include this event in your trip, check the date in advance, as the opening is tied to the grazing season.

Local History, Craft and Houses

The oldest written mention of Podkylava dates from 1709. The historic settlement consists of two parts: Podkylava and Zbehy. The landscape, too, has a long history of change. The Podkylava area in the Myjavská pahorkatina was forested before human settlement; as settlement progressed, this began to change. The history of the village can therefore be viewed not only through a single date, but also through its settlement pattern and the transformation of the landscape.

Bobbin lace-making was a distinctive local craft tradition: until the mid-20th century, women in Podkylava devoted themselves to the demanding craft of making fine lace. Several original houses have also been preserved, including 19th-century earthen houses, some still with thatched roofs. The craft and architectural styles offer further insights into local life, complementing the written history. Together, these themes provide a guide for travellers who would like to discover Podkylava’s cultural and agricultural side as well as its routes.
