In Miawa, the cultural offerings range from traditional farmstead life and the history of the Slovak people to marked hiking and cycling trails. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between these different highlights: they offer different ways to experience the region and help you tailor your stay to your own interests.

Farmstead life and national history

The Gazdovský dvor in Turá Lúka is a permanent exhibition of a typical Kopaničiar farmstead from the late 19th century. It presents traditional ways of life and living in the Myjava region. During a guided tour, you can learn about everyday objects, crafts, the Kopaničiaren work cycle and folk costumes. The focus is therefore on everyday life and the region’s way of life.

The main exhibition of the SNM – Museum of the Slovak National Councils in Myjava offers a different perspective. It covers nearly 170 years of the history of the Slovak people and their struggles for recognition of their distinct identity, self-determination, sovereignty and own statehood. The museum complex also includes the house of Anna Koléniová, where the first Slovak National Council met in 1848. Comparing the two subject areas helps you decide what to visit: the farmstead focuses on traditional ways of life and work, while the museum explores political history and national self-determination.

Tower, historic trail and routes

The Myjavská veža is the 67-metre-high tower of Myjava’s Tolerance Church, dating from 1785. Another way to explore the city’s history is the Historic Trail through Myjava: in 2014, eight information boards were installed along it, featuring dozens of historical photographs, accompanying texts and overview maps. The boards combine images and explanations to offer a distinctive way to explore the city’s history.

For hikers, the red-marked E8 section No. 0701h runs for 19.1 kilometres from the central orientation point in Myjava, via the Museum of the Slovak National Councils, to Veľká Javorina and Holubyho chata. The 4Cykloregio cycling route offers a different option: it is marked in blue, has a SPORT difficulty rating and runs through Brezová pod Bradlom, Košariská, Priepasné, Polianka, Myjava–Turá Lúka, Vrbovce and Chvojnica. It is 42.9 kilometres long in the region. At 19.1 kilometres, the E8 is the shorter hiking option; the 4Cykloregio cycling route is 42.9 kilometres long.

The natural environment also has a specific historical and geographical connection. The Myjava River was declared a natural monument in 1996; the protected area also includes the cadastral territory of Myjava. The protected landscape areas CHKO Biele Karpaty and CHKO Malé Karpaty also extend into the territory of Myjava.

Folklore and seasonal events

The MYJAVA International Folklore Festival takes place every year in June and lasts three days. The Deň sliviek (Plum Day) is held regularly in September at the Gazdovský dvor. It includes, among other things, a tasting of spirits, the traditional cooking of plum butter and the preparation of plum dumplings. The two events mark different seasonal highlights: the June festival is devoted to folklore, while the September event focuses on plums and their preparation. If you are planning your trip around one of the festivals, check the specific event dates in advance.

Getting there and finding your way

Myjava railway station is about a 15-minute walk from the Museum of the Slovak National Councils; Myjava is connected to Nové Mesto nad Váhom by rail. Another useful landmark is the SAD bus stop in the centre of Myjava, about a five-minute walk from the museum. Both walking times refer to the route to the museum, but start from different locations. The museum is about a 15-minute walk from the railway station and about five minutes from the SAD bus stop in the centre.
