Uhrovec brings together traces of local history with natural and commemorative sites. The birthplace of Ľudovít Štúr and Alexander Dubček is here, as is the ethnographic Uhrovské múzeum. At Jankov vŕšok, a nature reserve and the SNP monument stand side by side. When planning a stay, you can distinguish between cultural history, protected habitats and places of remembrance—without confusing nearby Uhrovec Castle with Uhrovský kaštieľ in the village.
Local History and Cultural Heritage
The birthplace of Ľudovít Štúr and Alexander Dubček is in Uhrovec, the birthplace of both figures. It was declared a national cultural monument in 1965. The ethnographic Uhrovské múzeum opened in 2004. Its collections include a Gothic bell dating from 1511 and a Renaissance bell from 1653. The two bells represent different styles and periods within the museum’s subject matter.
Uhrovský kaštieľ tells a different story: the Zaiovcov family gradually transformed the estate into a fortified family residence. The side wing housed the Zay Library, which contained more than 20,000 volumes. On 17 August 2023, the municipal website reported that restoration had been suspended due to a lack of funding. If you would like to visit the interior, check current access arrangements in advance.
Another historic site is the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in Uhrovec. This Neoclassical church was built in 1817. The village therefore brings together different forms of cultural heritage: a birthplace with national monument status, an ethnographic museum, a historic estate and a church dating from the 19th century.
Nature and Remembrance at Jankov vŕšok
Jankov vŕšok lies within the cadastral territory of Uhrovec and has been a nature reserve since 1993. It is characterized by limestone-associated stands of Cornelian cherry oak woodland and a large concentration of orchids, including the Lady Orchid and the Common Spotted Orchid. These plant and woodland communities give the nature reserve a profile distinct from the historic sites in the village.
The SNP monument also stands on Jankov vŕšok. It consists of a memorial mound complex with a pylon and mausoleum. SNP commemorations are held there every year in late August. The nature reserve and the monument are therefore located at the same named site, but appeal to different interests: one focuses on habitats and plants, the other on remembrance and commemoration.
The Striebornica recreation area includes a nature trail about aquatic and wetland ecosystems. Its focus differs from that of the orchid populations at Jankov vŕšok. Those interested in nature will find different perspectives on landscapes and ecosystems in the two descriptions.
Uhrovec Castle or Uhrovský kaštieľ?
Nearby Uhrovec Castle is located in Uhrovské Podhradie and should not be confused with Uhrovský kaštieľ in Uhrovec. From Uhrovské Podhradie, the castle can be reached along a green-marked trail in about 30 minutes. The surviving parts include a Late Romanesque chapel and towers. These details help distinguish the two historic sites: the estate of Uhrovský kaštieľ is connected with the history of the Zaiovcov family; Uhrovec Castle is the nearby destination in Uhrovské Podhradie.
Plan Your Visit
Advance telephone booking is required to visit the Uhrovské múzeum. The municipal website, updated on 1 April 2025, lists visiting hours as 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Arrange your booking for your preferred time slot. When planning, it is also worth treating the two similarly named historic sites separately: Uhrovský kaštieľ is in Uhrovec, while Uhrovec Castle is in nearby Uhrovské Podhradie.
