Šišov has a distinctive cultural and historical character: the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross stands at the centre of a fortified hillfort above the village; the manor house and historic park add architecture and landscape to the picture. A cycle route also passes through Šišov. This means you can choose the destination for its historic buildings and landscape as well as its specific connection to cycling.

Church and hillfort: distinct historical periods

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was completed in 1781; its tower was added in 1821. Four decades separate the two dates. The high altar, by contrast, dates from the church’s construction and features columned architecture with wooden angel figures. This allows the later addition of the tower to be distinguished chronologically from the altar furnishings, rather than treating them as a single building phase.

The church’s location also gives it a distinctive historical setting: it stands at the centre of a fortified hillfort above Šišov. Ceramic sherds found at the hillfort attest to Slavic settlement from the 8th to the 10th century. This archaeological period is long before the church was completed. The sherds therefore point to earlier settlement of the fortified site, while the dates 1781 and 1821 mark the building history of the present-day church.

The manor house and park as cultural monuments

The manor house has a different building history. The two-storey Neoclassical building stands on older foundations. In the municipal development programme for 2025–2034, the manor house and its associated park are listed as national cultural monuments under ÚZPF number 2188. Unlike the church, the focus here is less on two specified building phases and more on the combination of the building’s style, its older foundations and the park as a protected part of the monument complex.

Parkland and present-day use

The historic park lies east of the Šišov manor house, on both banks of the Livina stream. Its location is defined by two specific features: the east side of the manor house and the course of the stream. Rows of coniferous trees were planted along the paths, especially spruces, firs and larches. Both the riverside setting and the rows of trees are therefore important to the landscape: they give the park a different character from the church and manor house buildings.

The park’s open meadow areas are currently used for sports and physical education activities. Thus, alongside the historic design, there are also present-day activities: the avenues and conifer species describe the park’s layout, while the meadows reflect its current sporting and educational use. This distinction helps you understand the site not only in terms of its monument status but also its present-day function.

Cycling and orientation

The cycle route through Šišov adds a practical planning consideration for cycle tourists. As a guide to choosing, you can consider the village in terms of two interests: its architectural and local history on the one hand, and cycling on the other. A 2014 official description lists access to the manor house from the north via a local road and from the south via an access road through a chestnut avenue. If you are planning a visit to the manor house, check current access arrangements in advance.
