Haláčovce lies in the northern part of the Podunajská Pahorkatina. The Haláčovka stream flows through Haláčovce and belongs to the Bebrava River’s sub-basin. Another water feature is the Vodná nádrž Haláčovce reservoir, or VN Haláčovce for short. Its water surface covers 15.75 hectares; the reservoir serves to retain water and was built between 1987 and 1990 within the cadastral area of the municipality. The stream and reservoir are distinct landmarks: the Haláčovka flows through the village, while VN Haláčovce is designated as a fishing area. A sub-basin is a defined area within a larger river basin whose water flows into the same overarching water system. The connection to the Bebrava thus describes the Haláčovka’s hydrological scale; it supplements the stream’s local significance with its link to the river system.
Water and fishing in Haláčovce
As of August 26, 2026, VN Haláčovce was designated as carp fishing area 2-4730-1-1 and included in the national angling permit. Guest fishing permits are being issued for this area for the 2026 fishing season. Check the permit conditions before fishing. Access to VN Haláčovce is permitted only via a paved road. Include this access rule in your preparations: the fishing permit and permitted access are separate planning considerations.
The history and church of Haláčovce-Otrhánky
There are archaeological and written records marking the history of Haláčovce. Ceramic finds provide evidence of settlement as early as the Neolithic period, as well as from the 9th to the 15th century. The first written mention of Haláčovce dates to 1407. The finds and the written mention provide different chronological reference points: the ceramic finds indicate periods of settlement, while 1407 is the year of the first written mention.
The Haláčovce-Otrhánky church was built near Haláčovce around the 11th to 12th century. The original building is a single-nave Romanesque church with a semicircular apse. A single-nave building has a main nave; the apse is the semicircular end of the church interior. The church grounds are freely accessible. A prior arrangement is required to visit the interior of the church.
Landscape and local food culture
In the Haláčovce area, only remnants of low-growing oak-hornbeam woodland with pines remain. This specific type of vegetation is therefore also part of the local landscape, alongside the stream and reservoir.
A distinctive part of the local food culture is the “Haláčovský šúľanec” cooking and tasting competition featuring Šúľance. The municipality held it on August 31, 2024, and August 16, 2025, at the football field in Haláčovce.
