The bell in Tvrdomestice’s wooden bell tower was cast in 1740; the tower itself dates from the 19th century. This means the bell is older than the structure it belongs to. This sequence of dates offers a concrete way into local history: different historical periods can be distinguished through a single structure.
Hilly Landscape and Stream
Tvrdomestice lies along the middle reaches of the Chocina stream and in the northern part of the loess-covered Nitrianska pahorkatina uplands. The cadastral area is mostly deforested; hollows and erosion gullies shape the terrain. In places, there are oak-hornbeam forests with spruce and pine. Thus, both the forms of the uplands and the course of the stream shape the geographical setting of the village.
The landscape cannot be reduced to a single type of terrain: areas shaped by hollows and gullies are followed in places by woodland. The different details describe the natural environment within the cadastral area, while the Chocina provides a distinct geographical reference point. This allows you to distinguish between the landscape unit, the stream and the terrain’s features when locating Tvrdomestice.
Bell Tower and Church
The bell tower underwent extensive renovation in 1990, and the bells were also electrified. Its history therefore includes not only its construction in the 19th century and the older bell, but also the renovation and electrification. The dates represent different stages: 1740 for the casting of the bell, the 19th century for the wooden tower, and 1990 for the extensive renovation.
Another religious building is the branch church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross (Povýšenia sv. Kríža). It was built during Martin Medvec’s tenure as administrator of the Prašice parish, in its branch community of Tvrdomestice. On 26 November 2006, Archbishop Mons. Ján Sokol of Bratislava-Trnava solemnly consecrated the church. The construction history and the consecration date mark two different points in time; both are relevant to the village’s history.
An event from 1947 is also part of the historical picture: reports of an alleged apparition of Mary in a forest near Tvrdomestice attracted very large crowds. The apparition remains alleged; the historical reference lies in the reports and the crowds described.
Past Occupations of the Residents
In addition to its religious buildings, the village’s history includes former occupations. Agriculture and fruit growing were historically among the activities of Tvrdomestice residents. Records also attest to 15 potters in 1871, who made clay pipes as well. Agriculture, fruit growing and pottery thus offer different insights into life in the village in the past, without implying that they are activities currently offered to visitors.
Okruh Duchonka: Two Route Lengths
The blue cycling route No. 2101, “Okruh Duchonka,” passes through Tvrdomestice. The regional cycling route forms a 36-kilometre loop in total, connects communities at the foot of the Považský Inovec and runs through the municipality. Of the total distance, 0.6 kilometres lie within the cadastral area of Tvrdomestice.
The two distances answer different questions: 36 kilometres is the length of the entire loop, while 0.6 kilometres is the section within the cadastral area. If you are planning a ride, keep these different scales in mind and check the current route and conditions in advance. Route measurements may be revised, and conditions can change. This lets you compare the section in the village with the full loop without confusing the two distances.
