For a cultural stay in Bojná, three distinct themes stand out: the archaeological site of Hradisko Valy, the Archaeological Museum of Great Moravia, and the architectural history of the Church of All Saints. They take visitors from 9th-century Slavic society through original finds and a digital exhibition to Neoclassical church furnishings.

Hradisko Valy: Settlement, Fortifications, and Reconstructions

In the 9th century, Hradisko Valy was an important center of production, trade, and missionary activity, as well as the seat of the Slavic societal elite. The archaeological site was also a fortified settlement and contains the oldest evidence of the Christianization of the ancestors of today’s population. These historical highlights give the visit a clear connection to early history.

The open-air exhibition features a reconstruction of the western fortifications and model reconstructions of Slavic pit houses at the site where they were originally discovered. There is also a reconstructed clay oven, a blacksmith’s workshop, and a storage pit. The reconstructed eastern gate is presented as the largest reconstruction of a Slavic gate in Central Europe. Alongside the fortifications, visitors can explore housing, crafts, and food storage.

Hradisko Valy is also a destination on the Cyrillo-Methodian Cultural and Pilgrimage Route, certified by the Council of Europe. Access to the site is free year-round. Check local conditions before your visit.

Archaeological Museum of Great Moravia

The Archaeological Museum of Great Moravia in Bojná was established by the municipality in 2012 and is run as a museum exhibition by the Slovak National Museum. Together with a regional information center, it occupies a separate area of the municipal office in the village center. Original finds from Hradisko Valy are on display there. Thus, the finds themselves offer another way to explore the history alongside the reconstructions at the archaeological site.

A multilingual digital exhibition focuses on historical figures from the Great Moravian period: they address visitors and explain life and traditions at the time. The exhibition is available in Slovak, English, and German. The locations are easy to distinguish: the museum is in the village center, while Hradisko Valy is about 5 km from Bojná.

The Church of All Saints and Its Furnishings

The Church of All Saints in Bojná was originally a Gothic religious building and was later remodeled in the Neoclassical style. The main altar, dating from the late 18th century, is Neoclassical in style and bears an image of All Saints. The pulpit also dates from the late 18th century and follows the same style.

Details of the pulpit include a square parapet decorated with carved rosettes and a sculpture of Saint Michael the Archangel on the canopy. The church’s architectural history thus adds a much later period to the early medieval themes. Visitors considering Bojná primarily for its archaeology and history can weigh these different highlights when choosing where to stay.
