Žihárec brings together architectural history, local remembrance and a landscape along the Váh. Three topics are particularly helpful for understanding the place: the churches’ different building phases, the memory of the 1849 battle, and the waters between floodplain, terrace and former river channels. There are also community days held in honour of the battle. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you would like to shape your stay around cultural history, the landscape or a possible event date.

Churches with Different Building Phases

The Baroque Roman Catholic Church of St Joseph was built from 1728 to 1730 by decision of Imre Esterházy. It was later remodelled in the Classicist style; the tower of the Roman Catholic church was completed in 1833. Several building phases can therefore be distinguished at St Joseph: its Baroque construction, the later Classicist alteration and the date the tower was completed. The Reformed Church in Žihárec was built in the Classicist style in 1784. The two buildings can therefore be compared stylistically, but they tell different stories: at St Joseph, Classicism followed the Baroque, while the Reformed Church was built as a Classicist structure.

Battle Remembrance and Community Days

A monument in Žihárec commemorates the battle fought there on 16 June 1849. The monument to the Battle of Zsigárd was unveiled on 12 June 1999. The dates mark two different points in the town’s history: the battle in 1849 and the unveiling of the memorial in 1999. Through 2026, three-day annual community days in honour of the battle are held in Žihárec. If you would like to tie your visit to this occasion, check the dates for the relevant year. The XXVIII. Žihárecké dni was a three-day international event featuring local culture, folk traditions and modern music.

Váh Floodplain, Terrace and Former River Channels

The eastern part of Žihárec’s flat municipal area lies in the Váh floodplain. The western part lies on a terrace with numerous former river channels. Žihárec is close to the river and has a riverside landscape. The two sides of the municipal area thus have distinct landforms: the floodplain to the east and the terrace with former river channels to the west. Former river channels are old river courses; the term adds a specific type of water feature to the general description of the area’s proximity to the river.

Rybníky Teheľňa and Getting Your Bearings in Town

Rybníky Teheľňa I, II and III are located near Žihárec. The complex consists of three bodies of water separated by dams and designated as carp fishing waters. If you are planning to fish in these waters, check their current designation in advance. The Cultural, Social and Information Centre is located at Žihárec 85.
