A red cycling route, old branches of the Nitra River and a late Baroque church give Úľany Nad Žitavou a multifaceted character. Archaeological traces from several periods and a local event celebrating young wines add to this. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these highlights separately: the route offers a specific option for cycling, while the landscape and cultural history appeal to other interests.

Waterscape and Cycling Route

Mŕtve rameno Čiernej vody, a protected area along a section of the Nitra’s old riverbed, lies within the cadastral area of Úľany Nad Žitavou. The municipality also contains two named still-water fishing areas: Materiálové jazero is a still-water fishing area in an old branch of the Nitra and is used by the local angling association; Štrkovisko is another still-water fishing area in an old branch of the Nitra. This places a protected section of riverbed alongside two fishing areas as distinct ways of engaging with the water.

The red Route 045, the Požitavská cyklomagistrála I, runs for 27.5 km through Úľany Nad Žitavou and continues to the junction with Route 019. Its length provides a specific reference point for planning your ride. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Church and Archaeological Traces Through Time

The Church of St Martin the Bishop (Kostol sv. Martina biskupa) was built in 1781 as a late Baroque single-nave church. Its historicist main altar dates from the second half of the 19th century. The same church therefore displays two layers that differ in period and style: the late Baroque building and the later-dated altar. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave and briefly indicates the building’s basic layout.

The archaeological traces date back to the Neolithic period: settlement remains from the Neolithic are associated with the Lengyel culture. A burial ground belonging to the Únětice culture was discovered from the Early Bronze Age. Evidence of a settlement and a biritual burial ground dates from the Late Iron Age. The term “biritual” refers to two forms of burial. Together, these finds form a sequence from the Neolithic through the Early Bronze Age to the Late Iron Age—three clearly distinct horizons in the history of the area.

Tradition Celebrating Young Wines

Svätomartinské požehnanie mladého vína (St Martin’s Blessing of Young Wine) is a traditional event organized by local gardeners. Young wines are blessed and tasted at the event. Its focus is therefore on young wine and the local gardening tradition—a different way of experiencing the place than through its cycling route, river branches or church architecture. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the date in advance. A third edition of the Rezbárske sympózium, documented by the municipality in 2025, also gave visitors the opportunity to watch a work of art take shape from a tree trunk.
