Pavlová lies on the left bank of the Hron, at the foot of the Ipeľská pahorkatina hill country. The municipality combines its connection to the river with a varied landscape and a local history ranging from archaeological traces to living cultural traditions. Those looking for a destination with tangible historical and geographical points of interest can get to know Pavlová from these different perspectives.
Landscape and a long local history
In the eastern part of Pavlová are deforested ridges of the hill country, cut through by deep erosion gullies. In the west, the cadastral area includes 200 hectares of the wet Hron floodplain. The geographical location can therefore be described not only in terms of the river: the ridges and their gullies also shape the character of the municipal area. The river lowland and hill country are distinct, clearly identifiable landscape forms.
Archaeological evidence reaches back to the Stone Age and points to early settlement in the area. An archaeological cemetery dating from the arrival of the Hungarians was also excavated in Pavlová. Another historical trace leads back to 1135: at that time, a mill in Pavlová on the lower course of the Hron was recorded as property of Bzovík Monastery. These findings belong to different periods and tell different parts of the local history.
The history of the Church of Saint Lawrence can also be traced through several building phases. The first church dated to 1717 and was later demolished. A new stone church was built in its place between 1884 and 1888. It was destroyed during the Second World War; in the 1960s, residents rebuilt it with financial support. The former church building, the 19th-century replacement and the postwar reconstruction thus form part of a connected local history.
Culture and traditions
Pavlová is part of an ethnographic group of six municipalities associated with a women’s costume featuring a short skirt. Its origins are dated to the period of Ottoman rule. The preservation and occasional presentation of the costume are an important element of local national culture. Understanding it therefore involves not only its historical origins, but also the fact that the tradition is kept alive and sometimes displayed.
A folklore ensemble has been active in Pavlová since 2008, and its performances enrich municipal events. Concerts, puppet shows and theatre performances are also held in the municipal park and on the stage. The Szikince Festival is an established event organized jointly with other municipalities along the banks of the Perec. These different cultural connections range from local performances to collaboration with other municipalities.
