Bánov offers several distinct highlights for a trip of discovery: Neoclassical church art, the Kaštieľ manor house with eclectic elements, a folk culture exhibition and outdoor recreation in the Sihoť area. The historic buildings each offer a different perspective, while Sihoť foregrounds views, bodies of water, flora and fauna. The exhibition at the “Dom ľudových tradícií” complements these themes with objects from everyday life and from both the sacred and secular spheres. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding what interests you most: architectural history and art, folk culture or outdoor recreation.
Church and manor house: two architectural stories
The Church of St Michael the Archangel (“Kostol sv. Michala archanjela”) was built in 1842 in the Neoclassical style. In 1928, two side aisles with galleries were added, also in a similar Neoclassical style. The extension therefore builds on the original style and represents a distinct later phase of construction. An altarpiece depicting St Michael the Archangel is located above the main altar. It was created in 1860 by the Budapest painter Jozef Berky. The church thus offers a way to place both its architectural history and a single work of art in time: the painting was created between the original construction and the later extension. The similar Neoclassical style of the two building phases gives the history a different kind of continuity than a change of style would have.
The Kaštieľ manor house offers a different architectural perspective. It was built in the second half of the 19th century and is considered an example of a distinctive form of eclecticism. Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance architectural and artistic elements predominate. This sets its stylistic classification apart from that of the church: the later extension there is described as being in a similar Neoclassical style, while several stylistic influences shape the character of the manor house. The building lies on the eastern edge of Bánov, surrounded by the remains of its original park. These park remnants add a connection to the manor house’s former surroundings to its architectural history.
Folk collection and guided tours
The exhibits are the main focus at the “Dom ľudových tradícií.” On display are historic furniture, folk costumes, tools and paintings, as well as sacred and secular objects. The collection thus ranges from furnishings and everyday items to religious and non-religious pieces. It offers a different way to explore Bánov than the architecture of the church and manor house: here, the focus is on the variety of objects brought together in the exhibition. A residential house counted among the oldest in the village was designated as the location for the “Dom ľudových tradícií.” Guided tours of the exhibition, with expert commentary and a talk, can be arranged in advance. If you would like this additional context, plan to make arrangements before your visit.
Outdoor recreation in the Sihoť area
The Sihoť recreation area offers beautiful views and is surrounded by diverse natural landscapes and bodies of water. It is suitable for recreation and leisure in every season. Three information boards at the entrance provide information about local fauna and flora. Sihoť thus combines landscape and bodies of water with information about local wildlife and plant life. The boards provide a specific connection to the area’s natural environment, while the views and surrounding landscape define its character. If outdoor recreation is your main interest, you can consider Sihoť at any time of year.
Plan your stay around your interests
For a culture-focused trip, the church, manor house and exhibition each offer a different perspective: construction phases and an altarpiece, eclectic architecture or folk objects. If you take a guided tour of the “Dom ľudových tradícií,” arranging it in advance is the key planning step. Sihoť is suitable for recreation and leisure in every season. This lets you plan your stay around your interest in architectural history, folk culture or nature, rather than combining the different themes into a single focus.
