Veľký Lapáš can be explored through three distinct themes: the “Lapášsky orloj” wine clock in the Lapáš vineyards, the church’s architectural history, and a short walk through local vineyards. The walk can be combined with a visit to Dvor u rezbára. This gives you several ways to plan your trip: focus on the landscape and winegrowing, a moving object that tells its own time, or sacred architecture.

Wine clock, vineyards, and a walk

The moving “Lapášsky orloj” wine clock was created entirely by local woodcarver Peter Šrank. It is located in the Lapáš vineyards, on the cadastral boundary between Malý Lapáš and Veľký Lapáš. Veľký Lapáš itself lies in the western part of the Žitavská sprašová pahorkatina loess uplands. These are two distinct geographical reference points: the clock is located by reference to the vineyards and cadastral boundary, while the village is described by its location in the uplands.

A municipal visitor guide, updated on June 9, 2025, lists daily striking times of 12:00 and 18:00. If the striking time matters for your plans, check the times again before your visit. The information answers different planning questions: the walk is described as short and easy, while the clock is associated with two specific times of day. This lets you choose based on the level of activity or a particular moment.

A short, easy walk through the local vineyards can be combined with a visit to Dvor u rezbára. However, the vineyards around Dvor u rezbára are privately owned; entering or parking on these properties is prohibited. Therefore, do not plan your walk across this private land.

Local history and sacred architecture

The first written mention of Lapáš dates to 1113, when the village belonged to the Zobor Monastery’s estate. The church of “Kostol Nepoškvrneného počatia Panny Márie” offers a different historical perspective: it was originally Gothic and was given a Baroque makeover and extended in 1715. The early mention and the later renovation concern different scales of history: one is written evidence of the village, the other a specific change to a church building. “Given a Baroque makeover” describes a stylistic transformation; “extended” also refers to a structural addition. This makes the nature of the architectural change clear, as well as its date.

More cultural highlights

The Way of the Cross near Dvor u rezbára has 14 stations and is made of poplar wood. A Way of the Cross divides a route into religious stations; the number 14 makes the specific sequence tangible, while poplar identifies the material. Unlike the church, whose history is explained through its Gothic origins and later renovation, here the number and material are distinguishing features. For the wine clock, its creator and the stated striking times are the specific points of interest. This gives you a choice between architectural history, a religious Stations of the Cross, and a winegrowing-related object.

“Chodenie Lucií obcou” is scheduled to take place in Veľký Lapáš on December 13, 2026. Check the date in advance if you’re planning your trip around it.
