The archaeological site, architectural monuments and Malý Bahorec protected area give your stay in Podhorany a range of different points of interest. Particularly rich cultural heritage can be found in the village district of Sokolníky, where written local history, archaeological traces and buildings from different centuries come together.

Archaeological Traces and Churches in Sokolníky

Sokolníky is documented in written records from 1113 and is designated as an archaeological site. The Hríb site includes settlement traces from prehistoric times and the Middle Ages, including evidence from the 11th and 12th centuries. At the old cemetery in Sokolníky, remains of a vanished sacred building also point to the archaeological history of the village district.

A specific place to glimpse the past is the preserved foundations of the vanished Romanesque Church of St Michael. They are located beside the field path to State Road 593. The site is freely accessible to the public and has an information board. The foundations are listed as a national cultural monument under registration number ÚZPF 1523/1.

The parish Church of St Michael the Archangel in the village district of Sokolníky offers a distinct historical and architectural perspective. It dates from 1758, is Baroque-Classical in style, and was modified in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Romanesque foundations and the later-built parish church represent different building phases, so their descriptions should be treated as two separate points of reference.

Architectural Monuments and Local Memorials

Other monuments broaden the picture beyond the churches. Hrádok is a medieval national cultural monument listed under ÚZPF 1524/1. The Kúria Kochanovských manor complex dates from the early 18th century: it is Classical in style and has an L-shaped floor plan. By contrast, Villa Katscherovcov and its garden date from the early 20th century. The villa is Historicist in style and also has an L-shaped floor plan. This similar layout allows the two complexes, which differ in date and style, to be compared.

Smaller memorials are also part of Sokolníky’s local cultural heritage. A cross was erected in memory of the end of the First World War in 1918. A statue of St Joseph with relics of saints dates from the mid-18th century. There is also a statue of St Florian on a plinth: this national cultural monument was created in 1653 in the folk Baroque style. These works add religious and historical memorials to the area’s architectural history.

Malý Bahorec and Routes in the Municipality

Malý Bahorec adds a natural feature. The protected area covers 6.00 hectares in the Sokolníky cadastral area and is designated as a site of European importance under code SKUEV0877. It is home to one of the largest populations of the green-winged orchid (Anacamptis morio) in the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. This brings a specific plant species into focus alongside the architectural and archaeological features.

The routes also offer several different points of reference for finding your way, though these do not indicate a specific walking time. In the municipality of Podhorany, a signpost junction for blue- and yellow-marked routes lies beneath the 88.9-metre-long railway viaduct. There, the blue-marked route towards Štitáre is called “Zarneckého chodník”. Other signposts point to the Hôrka viewpoint and the Horná studňa spring. Check current route conditions before setting out.

The municipality has a regional bus terminus for travel to the area. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for your travel date. When choosing a holiday apartment, the focus of your trip can help guide your decision: Sokolníky is known for its archaeological and architectural heritage, while Malý Bahorec adds a natural attraction.
