A Gothic castle moat used as a summer amphitheatre, a viewpoint on Zobor and religious buildings from different eras give a trip to Nitra a range of possible focuses. You can explore the city’s history or make nature, views and archaeological traces the centre of your visit. When looking for a holiday apartment, it also helps to decide first which of these themes matter most to you during your stay.

Castle Culture and Religious Buildings

Nitra Castle is a national cultural monument. Its Gothic moat also serves as a summer amphitheatre: during the summer months, open-air film screenings and concerts are held there. The moat is freely accessible to all visitors. If you would like to include events in your travel plans, check the dates for your stay.

The synagogue in Nitra offers a different architectural accent. The freestanding building, designed in the Moorish-Byzantine style, was completed in September 1911 and is used mainly as a concert and exhibition hall. The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Dražovce dates from the 11th century. It is Romanesque and is one of the oldest religious buildings in Slovakia.

The Calvary offers another way to explore religious architecture: twelve Neo-Romanesque chapels form the Stations of the Cross and are arranged along a path leading to the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. The themes are therefore quite distinct: the synagogue centres on a single freestanding building, while the Calvary features a sequence of chapels along a path.

Zobor: Views, Nature Trail and History

Pyramída is a subpeak of Zobor, at an altitude of 553 metres. From there, panoramic views stretch across Nitra and the surrounding area. The Zoborské vrchy nature trail has 27 stops. For planning purposes, a basic circular route to the summit of Zobor and back is also described: it starts at the Zobor Health Institute and can be reached by city bus routes 1, 9 and 25. As bus routes may change, check the current connection before travelling.

One of the stops on the nature trail is the Zoborská lesostep National Nature Reserve, where 14 protected plant species can be found. The forests around the summit also bear visible traces of earlier settlement: the stone ramparts of a prehistoric settlement from the Late Bronze Age can still be seen there. The views, protected plant life and archaeological remains each offer a different focus, rather than forming a single sightseeing theme.

The Zobor Monastery adds another historical layer. The Benedictine monastery of St. Hippolytus was founded on Zobor in the 9th century as the first monastery on the territory of Slovakia. From the 11th to the 14th century, it served as a religious, public and cultural centre. These dates help distinguish the monastery’s history from the prehistoric traces on the mountain.

City Park and Getting Around

Nitra City Park covers 20 hectares and consists of three parts dating from different periods. It adds a distinct urban focus to the historical and nature-related themes. For information about the city, guided tours, advance ticket sales and souvenirs, the Nitra Tourist Information Centre is a useful place to visit.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

You can compare the themes to help make your choice: the castle, synagogue, Calvary and church represent architectural and cultural history; on Zobor, the focus is on views, the nature trail, the nature reserve and archaeological traces. The city park and the services offered by the tourist information centre add further aspects to your visit. First decide which themes you want to shape your trip, then look for a holiday apartment that suits your plans.
