The semicircular bend of the Ipeľ around the village centre illustrates Pastovce’s waterside setting. The village lies in the Ipeľská pahorkatina, on the river’s damp right-bank floodplain. The Ipeľ curves around the centre on one side, while the Čárad stream borders the village centre on the other. This gives you several perspectives to explore during your stay: the riverside landscape, local history and outdoor activities. When looking for holiday accommodation in Pastovce, it can help to decide first which of these themes you want to shape your visit.

Local History and Architecture

Pastovce was first mentioned in writing in 1135 under the name Paztuh. Archaeological finds also attest to a Neolithic settlement of the Lengyel culture. This places an archaeological finding from the Neolithic period alongside a dated written record from the Middle Ages. The two refer to different periods in the village’s history.

The Reformed Church in Pastovce was originally built in the 12th century as a Romanesque manor church with a gallery. In the 15th century, it was given a Gothic polygonal presbytery. The transition from its Romanesque origins to the Gothic addition marks two clearly dated stages in the building’s history. A memorial house commemorates Zsigmond Zalabai, who was born in Pastovce and was a prominent writer and literary historian. This brings literature and local history into focus alongside architecture. To mark the 150th anniversary of the battles of 1848–1849, the municipal administration had a carved memorial pillar erected in front of the church.

Gorge, Pond and Cycling Route

Farkas Valley is a gorge about 300 metres long and 30 metres deep, with prehistoric fossils. Its dimensions and fossil finds make both the landform and its geological significance tangible. This is a distinct point of interest for travellers interested in landscapes as well as historic buildings. The pond in Pastovce is a popular recreation spot for anglers. The gorge and pond thus cater to different interests: geological history and fishing.

The cycling route through Pastovce is Stage 02 of Via Slovakia (Komárno–Šahy). It passes through Malé Kosihy, Pastovce, Bielovce and Ipeľský Sokolec. Between Malé Kosihy and Ipeľský Sokolec, the route runs mostly along the main road, with short sections on farm tracks. If you plan to ride this stage, check the route and conditions before setting out, as they may change.

Plan Your Journey and Accommodation

Pastovce is a stop on train route 153 between Šahy and Čata. Check the timetable for your travel date before relying on this connection for your arrival or onward journey. You can then plan your trip around the things that matter to you: historic buildings, the setting between the Ipeľ and Čárad, the pond or the Via Slovakia stage. You can look for accommodation in Pastovce to suit your priorities without assuming that every activity has to follow the same plan.
