Nový Tekov lies on the Hron floodplain. Churches, archaeological finds and a long equestrian tradition give the town a range of historical and cultural facets. There are also contemporary activities related to riding and driving. You can tailor your stay to your specific interests—from architectural history to activities by the river.

By the Hron: Landscape and Connections

Nový Tekov lies on the right-bank floodplain of the Hron River. The connection to neighbouring Starý Tekov is also closely linked to the river: a former ferry connected the two places across the Hron. It was replaced by a modern single-lane bridge. The change from ferry to bridge is part of the town’s history and makes crossing the river a distinctive feature of local orientation. The bridge is described as a single-lane crossing; this information does not allow any further conclusions about traffic or access.

Equestrian Tradition: History and Activities Today

The Nový Tekov stud farm was founded in 1861 to breed draft and sport horses. The historic stud farm is also associated with trail rides, carriage rides and rides in a trotting sulky. This gives the town’s equestrian history a tangible connection to different forms of riding and driving.

Ranč u Bobiho offers carriage or wagon rides that follow the Hron and pass through Nový Tekov on the way back to the ranch grounds. The activity can therefore be understood in terms of a clearly described route. Riding lessons for beginners and lower-intermediate riders are also available there year-round. Trail rides along the Hron are a way to discover the local flora and fauna. When planning, you can choose between a wagon or carriage ride, a riding lesson and a trail ride, without conflating the stud farm’s historical activities with the ranch’s current offerings.

Churches and Architectural History

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Charles is a Baroque-Classical church dating from 1811. The Reformed Church offers another architectural landmark from a different period: it was built in the Classical style in 1791. Inside are a red marble communion table from 1821 and a Classical pulpit made of red marble from 1829. The church was restored after a fire in 1850.

The Reformed Church’s construction, furnishings and restoration belong to several distinct phases. If you are interested in architecture, the dates help you distinguish the sequence: the two furnishings from 1821 and 1829 followed the 1791 construction; restoration came after the fire of 1850. The cemetery in Nový Tekov is also notable for its old gravestones, adding another distinct facet to the town’s historical themes.

Archaeological Traces and Marušová

Among the oldest archaeological finds in Nový Tekov is a Roman-Barbarian settlement dating from the 8th to 9th century. There is also a Slavic inhumation grave from the 9th century. The two finds point to different aspects of earlier settlement and burial practices: a settlement on the one hand and an inhumation grave on the other. They add a much earlier historical period to the later church buildings and the history of the stud farm.

Several original 19th-century houses, along with their farm buildings, have been preserved in the district of Marušová. The focus here is not on a single building, but on the relationship between homes and agricultural buildings. Together with the churches, stud farm and archaeological finds, they show a local history shaped by different eras and aspects of life.

Memorial Room and Visit Planning

The Nový Tekov memorial room is located in the former one-room school. It opened to mark the 700th anniversary of the community’s first written mention. Visits are possible on Thursdays from 16:30 to 18:30; organised groups can arrange visits in advance. If the memorial room is important to your plans, schedule your visit for this time slot and check the visitor information before travelling.
