If you want to make culture, winemaking and nature the focus of your trip, Levice offers a range of highlights: historic buildings, an archaeological exhibition, routes through wine-growing areas and protected landscapes. When planning, it is worth keeping both your interests and specific time slots and conditions in mind—for example, the observation tower’s seasonal opening hours or the need to book a wine tasting in advance.

Cultural history from the Middle Ages to archaeology

The Church of St Michael the Archangel was built after a major city fire: the Esterházy family had it constructed between 1773 and 1780. The Dobó Manor House represents another chapter in the history of architecture: a two-storey Renaissance fortified manor house dating from the second half of the 16th century. The first synagogue in Levice is dated to 1853 or 1854.

At the Tekov Museum, the archaeology exhibition traces social development from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages in the area covered by the museum. It also explores the Želiezovce, Maďarovce and Čaka cultures, named after archaeological sites in the Levice District. This broadens the perspective from individual buildings to a much longer history of settlement and culture.

The Tekov Museum’s program also includes exhibitions, classical music concerts and lectures. Events include Museum and Gallery Night and Museum Week; dates may vary. If you would like to attend one of these events, check the schedule before your visit.

Kalvária: Stations of the Cross, views and wine tasting

Levická Kalvária combines 14 Stations of the Cross chapels with the restored remains of a historic 18th-century church. The educational trail introduces the history of the site as well as its flora and fauna. A panoramic information board offers views of the surroundings of Levice, complementing the historical themes with a sense of the landscape.

In favourable weather, the observation tower on Levická Kalvária is open from May to October on Sundays and public holidays, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. This is a specific point to factor into your plans: before travelling, check whether the weather and opening hours are suitable for your visit.

Wine is also part of this place. You can sample wines from local producers in the former Schoeller estate cellars beneath Kalvária, by prior arrangement. Tasting arrangements may change, so contact the organisers in advance. Three different interests come together here: religious architecture, an educational trail focused on nature, and a tasting that requires advance booking.

Wine country and protected nature

Krížny vrch is home to more than 70 hectares of vineyards and around 250 hajloks, or wine cottages. An educational trail runs between the cottages. Here, winemaking is not just a topic—it also shapes the landscape. This differs from Levická Kalvária, where history, flora and fauna are the focus of the educational trail.

The Levické rybníky by the Perec stream are a protected area covering 91.83 hectares. Designated in 1974, they border the built-up area of Levice directly. A recreation area was established at the ponds in 2013. Information boards explain the area’s formation and importance, as well as its flora and fauna. Before visiting, please observe the protected area’s current access rules.

Horšianska dolina is also part of the wider regional hiking area. It is a national nature reserve where protection levels 3 and 4 apply; part of the area is of European importance. This designation complements the ponds bordering Levice with a natural area that has its own regional significance.

Another leisure option is Margita–Ilona, located 6 km from Levice in the direction of Šahy, in the Kalinčiakovo district. It has an outdoor swimming pool with four pools and sports grounds. It operates seasonally, and facilities may change, so check the latest information before your visit.

Find a hotel in Levice to suit your plans

If you are looking for a hotel in Levice, start by deciding which themes you want to shape your stay: museum events and architectural history, the various attractions of Kalvária, or winemaking and nature. The schedules and conditions also vary: museum events have changing dates, the observation tower has a limited seasonal opening window, tastings require advance booking, and Margita–Ilona operates seasonally. Pay particular attention to the conditions that matter most for your plans.
