The history of Hronské Kľačany is marked by religious buildings, the waterscape along the Perec, and markets scheduled for specific times of year. These topics can help you choose the focus of your stay: churches and chapels, local cultural history, or a market date. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether to plan your trip around an event or around the area’s architectural and landscape history.
Religious architectural history
The first chapel in Hronské Kľačany was built in 1764 in what is now the cemetery. The original old church, dedicated to Saints Philip and James, was built on the same site in 1784. It had neither a tower nor bells. A bell tower in the local cemetery was ceremonially unveiled on 7 July 2013. The bell inside is also dedicated to Saints Philip and James—the same saints to whom the old church was dedicated.
The Church of the Divine Heart of Jesus is an example of a different architectural style. It was built in 1930–1932 as a single-nave church with a presbytery; a three-storey tower stands on the right side of the façade. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Compared with the 1784 building, which had neither a tower nor bells, its defining features are the combination of a single-nave church, presbytery, and façade tower.
A Marian chapel was built on Krížny vrch in 1913–1914. The initiative came from chaplain Imrich Jonáš; local winegrowers and residents of Podlužany and Hronské Kľačany funded the construction themselves. Its furnishings include a small stone altar and a Baroque-style statue of the Mother of God holding the dead Jesus, taken down from the cross, in her arms. The chapel adds another clearly identified religious building to the history of the churches and cemetery.
Perec and local culture
The Perec drainage canal, locally known as Kompa, was constructed close to Hronské Kľačany in 1634. An old mill was restored along the Perec that same year. Together, these details point to a shared historical reference: both the construction of the canal and the restoration of the mill date to 1634.
More recent cultural history is also associated with specific dates. A monument in Hronské Kľačany was ceremonially unveiled on 7 July 2002; it was created by academic sculptor Stanislav Mikuš. The Hron folk group performed in Krakovany and Piešťany in 1975 and in Myjava in 1976.
There is a public fire pit by the water installation behind the school grounds. If you include it in your plans, be sure to follow the local fire safety rules. Alongside the recorded history of the Perec, visitors can therefore find a specific place to visit and a practical rule to bear in mind when planning their trip.
Markets and travel planning
The Hodový jarmok is scheduled annually in June, including in the area around the mill. Farmers’ markets are scheduled for March at the cultural centre. The market squares are also set to host traditional craft demonstrations and food and drink services, including restaurant options, fast food, and catering. If a market is the reason for your trip, check the exact date for the year in question in advance. The two scheduled periods offer different seasonal highlights: the Hodový jarmok takes place in June, and the farmers’ markets in March.
Hronské Kľačany has a railway stop called Hronské Kľačany. If travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel date. Hronské Kľačany is also a founding member, together with Levice and Starý Tekov, of the Tekovsko-hontiansky cycling region, founded in December 2020. The association’s goals include developing a cycling route intended to connect all participating municipalities.
When choosing when to travel, you can weigh the seasonally scheduled markets against the longer-term themes of architectural and landscape history. First decide which focus suits your stay, then take the event date or train connection into account when looking for a holiday apartment.
