Želiezovce lies in the Danubian Lowland on the right bank of the Hron. The town combines a long history with protected parkland and riverside landscapes. You can organize your travel plans around several themes: the church, castle and museum represent cultural history, while the parks and floodplain forests offer a glimpse of the landscape. This can help you decide whether historic buildings, archaeological themes or nature should be the focus of your trip.

Church, Castle and Early Local History

The originally Gothic Church of St. James stands in the center of Želiezovce and preserves murals dating from around 1430. The building’s history also includes a much older find: the altar base is made from a Roman sarcophagus dating to the 2nd century. Gothic paintings and the reused Roman artifact thus bring together two widely separated periods in one place.

The Esterházy Castle reflects a different architectural development. It was originally Baroque and was later remodeled in the Classicist style. These two phases give the castle its own architectural history, distinct from that of St. James’s Church. The first written mention of the town also reaches far back: it dates to 1274. At that time, Želiezovce was mentioned under the name Selyz as a settlement with a church, a mill and a stone bridge. This early description complements the later buildings with a glimpse of the town in the Middle Ages.

Museum, Archaeology and Schubert

The town museum and the Franz Schubert Memorial Room are located in Sovom zámočku. The archaeological exhibition covers the Želiezovská culture and spans the period from the Stone Age through the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman period to the Migration Period. The museum thus brings together a specific cultural theme and several successive historical periods.

A room on the upper floor is dedicated to Schubert’s life and work and is furnished with period furniture. The composer’s name also features in the town’s history: Count Ján Karol Esterházy brought Franz Sacher to Želiezovce as his personal cook. Sacher is credited with inventing the world-famous Sacher torte there. Thus, alongside musical history, culinary connections are also part of the town’s local history.

Parks and the Landscape along the Hron

Želiezovský Park is a protected historic park in Želiezovce. F. Schubert Park is a protected 13-hectare area in the center of town. It is home to a protected bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) with two rows of needles: the tree is 25 meters tall and estimated to be 200 years old. Its height and age tell different things about the tree; the height is given alongside an explicitly approximate age estimate.

The nature-related details also highlight different features. The Čereš pheasantry is located in Želiezovce and covers 2,136 hectares. Floodplain forests are characteristic along the Hron in the surrounding area. The landscape themes thus range from the protected park in the town center to a large pheasantry and the forests along the river. A national folk art festival is held annually in F. Schubert Park. If the festival is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates for your chosen year.

A Possible River Route

In addition to the local cultural and landscape themes, the Hron offers a route of its own. A section of the river from Jur nad Hronom to Želiezovce can be traveled by boat; if appropriate, the route can be continued as far as the Danube. This gives two possible destinations: Želiezovce or, if you continue, the Danube. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether the river section ends in Želiezovce or continues farther. This route option complements the themes of church, museum and park, offering a different focus for your stay.
