Čata brings together a landscape along the Hron and a vivid local history. This combination offers a practical starting point when choosing a holiday apartment: Ľudový dom preserves details of traditional domestic culture, while year-round fishing is permitted in the Hron No. 2 fishing district, subject to closed seasons. This makes it possible to compare cultural history and fishing as different focuses for your stay.
Location and Landscape
Čata lies at an elevation of 130 m in the eastern part of the Danubian Lowland and the southern part of the Ipeľ Hills. The municipality is situated on the low-lying floodplain along the right bank and on the terraces of the Hron. The river crosses the cadastral area of Čata from north to south, coming from the direction of Pohronský Ruskov. The elevation, hills, and river floodplain each give the location its own distinct geographical character.
A Glimpse of Local Domestic Culture
Ľudový dom dates from 1896 and preserves elements of folk architecture. The iron fence dating from 1930 also remains part of the house. Inside are original furnishings from a traditional Čata living room, known as the “clean room.” The rear room has been set up as a museum; it contains a still-functioning loom as well as accessories such as a spinning wheel and a spindle.
The house aims to introduce young people to material evidence from the past and spark their interest in how their ancestors lived. Alongside the preserved architectural features, the focus is therefore also on domestic life in earlier times. Weaving is presented both as part of the local culture’s history and through the loom in the museum.
History and Cultural Traditions
Archaeological finds provide evidence of settlements dating from the Neolithic, Copper Age, Hallstatt period, Early Bronze Age, and La Tène period through to the Roman-Barbarian period and the Slavic period after the Great Moravian Empire. These finds cover a period far earlier than the 19th-century Ľudový dom and broaden the view of the area’s history.
Viticulture, basketry, and weaving were also part of local life in the past. The local musical tradition also has a continuing presence: the Rozmaring singing society still exists today. Its members organized cultural events and performed at them. The Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist dates from 1958 and is still used for services.
Road Connections and Fishing
A Class I road runs through Čata, connecting it with the surrounding area and the nearest employment centres, Levice and Štúrovo.
Section Hron No. 2 of the fishing district stretches from the lower cadastral boundary of the municipality of Čata to the MVE Šárovce weir. Fishing is permitted there year-round, provided the applicable closed seasons are observed. For a stay focused on fishing, both the section boundaries and the closed seasons should therefore be taken into account when planning.
