The historic heart of Rožňava consists of a spacious square and several adjoining streets. The square is considered the largest of its kind in Slovakia. The current layout of the town centre took shape around the end of the 15th century. Rožňava is also one of the centres of the Gothic Route in Gemer. This combination draws attention both to the layout of the town centre and to Rožňava’s place in the region’s cultural heritage.

Gothic, Renaissance and mining art

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a medieval Gothic church dating from the late 13th century; its construction was completed in 1304. It is considered Rožňava’s oldest and most valuable cultural monument. The cathedral also houses a panel painting regarded as the oldest depiction of mining on an altarpiece in Central Europe. Thus, medieval religious architecture and an image connected to mining history come together in one building—a distinctive combination for anyone interested in art and regional history.

The Rožňava Watchtower is a Renaissance tower built between 1643 and 1654. From its gallery, you can see all the monuments in the historic centre, the Calvary, the town and the Rožňava Basin. The cathedral and tower represent different periods of construction and offer different perspectives: here, you can admire a Gothic church with a distinctive panel painting; there, the gallery opens up views of the town centre and other named landmarks. The gap between the completion of the cathedral and the construction of the tower makes the contrast all the more tangible.

Visitors can explore the watchtower without a guided tour during the tourist information office’s opening hours. As opening hours may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

Calvary and a walk

The Calvary of Rožňava is among the oldest Calvary complexes in Slovakia and is the oldest monument of its kind in the Gemer region. The walk from Rožňava Town Hall on Miners’ Square to the Calvary is considered easy. It is less than two kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 120 metres. This gives you both the distance and elevation change for planning your walk. As route conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Mining and Gemer at the museum

The Mining Museum in Rožňava is a regional history district museum specialising in the mining and metallurgical industries of Gemer. It has five independent permanent exhibition units. The subject matter ranges from mining and the metallurgical industry to the age of steam, mining workplaces, and the natural environment of the Slovak Karst and neighbouring areas. The courtyard features mining machinery and a mining railway.

The museum presents mining from several angles: alongside technology and workplaces, its exhibitions cover the age of steam and topics related to nature. This sets a museum visit apart from the single panel painting in the cathedral depicting mining on an altarpiece. Those exploring Rožňava’s cultural history can thus consider different ways of engaging with mining—as an artistic subject in the cathedral and as one of the museum’s central themes.
