Tokaj wine, regional cuisine and historic buildings give Viničky a clear focus for a trip combining food and culture. The village's vineyards stretch across tuff soils on the southern slopes of the Zemplín Mountains. Wine is therefore not just a subject for tastings: it is also part of a landscape that shapes the character of the village. When planning your trip, you can combine a wine tasting with a restaurant visit or a look at the village's history.
Wine, Tastings and Regional Cuisine
Viničky is one of the villages along the Tokaj Wine Route. Here, visitors can enjoy local culinary specialties as well as wine tastings in cellars. The Zlatý Strapec family winery is run by the third generation of winemakers. Tastings take place in a medieval cellar with two tasting rooms. Furmint, Lipovina, Yellow Muscat, and sweet and dry Spontaneous and Selection wines are offered in the tasting room; the wine selection may vary. If you are planning a tasting, check for a suitable time and the current selection.
The Zlatá Putňa restaurant complements the focus on wine with Zemplín cuisine, traditional Slovak and Hungarian dishes, and seasonal specialties. You can therefore consider regional cuisine and wine as two aspects of your trip. Check opening hours and the menu before visiting the restaurant, as both may change.
Cultural History Between the Wine Cellar and Chapel
The family of Count Július Andrássy owned large wine cellars, wine houses and a chapel in Viničky, alongside its vineyards. St. Joseph's Chapel on the family's estate was built in the late 18th century in the Baroque style and is now used for Roman Catholic Masses. If you would like to attend a Mass during your visit, check the time in advance. The village's history is reflected not only in its winegrowing, but also in buildings associated with the Andrássy family.
Another historical highlight is the Filagoria: this surviving light fortification dates from the First Czechoslovak Republic and is used as a lookout point. Together with the chapel and historic wine cellars, it offers different perspectives on Viničky's past—from religious use and winegrowing to fortification architecture.
Music is also part of the village's cultural life. Tokajský strapec is a women's folk singing group founded in 1972. It performs at various cultural events in the Medzibodrožie and Použie regions. Through its repertoire, the group seeks to preserve the old customs and traditions of its ancestors. This traditional song repertoire thus complements the architectural heritage with a distinctive way to experience regional culture.
The Bodrog, Nature and Cycling
Boat trips on the Bodrog start at the harbor behind Viničky and travel as far as neighboring Hungary. The trips include explanations of the river's features and the flora and fauna of protected areas. Tokaj wine tastings and refreshments are also available on board. If you are planning a trip, check the schedule and current onboard offerings with the operator in advance.
For a different focus, there is Borsuk, a protected landscape area in the northern cadastral territory of Viničky with heat-loving vegetation. An obsidian deposit was discovered in the andesite area. Nature and geology therefore complement the village's wine and cultural history.
Cycling is also part of the local offering: under the Cross-bike project completed in 2021, Viničky provided eight electric bicycles, a charging station and a rest area; a 1.75-kilometer cycling path was also repaired. When it was handed over, the public bicycle system was accessible to everyone. If you plan to use the bicycles, check their current availability in advance.
