A distinctive combination defines Veľký Kamenec: the castle tells the story of medieval and later fortification architecture, while Tarbucka, with sands blown across andesite hillsides, forms a geomorphologically rare landscape in Europe. A marked hiking trail leads from Veľký Kamenec via Tarbucka to Streda nad Bodrogom. Architectural history and nature are therefore two different ways to explore the area. Whether you would rather learn more about historic architecture or about the landscape and species protection gives your visit a clear focus.

Tarbucka: geology and species protection

The andesite hills are covered with sands blown across the slopes; the rocks consist mainly of andesite. This geomorphological feature is rare in Europe. Tarbucka is also of particular importance for an endangered species: it is currently the only known and confirmed site in Slovakia where the critically endangered European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) both occurs and reproduces. The Tarbucka Natura 2000 site is a site of European importance and lies within the cadastral areas of Streda nad Bodrogom and Veľký Kamenec. Geology and species protection thus give the nature theme two distinct focuses: the rare landscape form and the turtle’s habitat.

Hiking trail and park

The marked “Veľký Kamenec – Tarbucka – Streda nad Bodrogom” hiking trail runs from Veľký Kamenec via Tarbucka to Streda nad Bodrogom. At the entrance to the small park in Veľký Kamenec, there is an information board with a map of the route. There is another information board and a viewpoint at the summit of Tarbucka. The boards therefore serve different purposes: at the park entrance, a map shows the route, while at the summit there is another information board and a view. Check the trail markers on site before relying on the route.

Wooden statues of medieval Hungarian warriors stand in the European Park of Veľký Kamenec. These depictions add a distinct historical theme to the area’s architectural history. Those interested in the region’s history can also take in the park’s figures alongside the castle, church and manor house.

Castle, church and manor house

Veľký Kamenec Castle is mentioned in a document dating from 1323. Its best-preserved typical Renaissance fortification feature is a massive pentagonal bastion with embrasures on three levels. Its shape and embrasures make the bastion a tangible architectural detail through which the castle’s later fortification architecture can be seen.

The Church of Saint Joseph the Foster Father stands on a hill not far from the castle. It is Neoclassical and was built between 1801 and 1814. A manor house below the ruins of the medieval castle was built in the late 17th century in the Baroque style. A major renovation in the early 19th century gave it its present-day Neoclassical appearance. The church and manor house can thus be distinguished by their dates: the manor house is older, while the church was built in the early 19th century; the manor house acquired its Neoclassical appearance in a later renovation.

Historic character of the village

The area’s former livelihoods are also part of its history: agriculture and viticulture were local occupations. After 1918, the occupations of the inhabitants also remained unchanged. This continuity adds an economic perspective on Veľký Kamenec to the traces left by the castle, church and manor house. Together, these offer several distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: Tarbucka’s geological uniqueness, the marked trail, the historic buildings and the traditional occupations.
