A green-marked footpath, an educational trail open year-round and a church with a Gothic architectural history offer different ways to experience Spišské Tomášovce. At Tomášovský výhľad, rocky scenery and climbing come together; the town’s history stretches from a Slavic hillfort to local festive traditions.

Rock Formations and Trails

Tomášovský výhľad is a terraced rock formation on the southern slope of Ludmanka, 680 metres above sea level. In some places, it rises about 145 metres above the Hornád River. The shortest footpath to the rock starts in Spišské Tomášovce and follows a green-marked hiking trail: first across a meadow, then through a forest with a moderate incline. Tomášovský výhľad is also used as a climbing practice area. The trail and climbing offer different ways to experience the same rock formation.

Since 1964, the Prielom Hornádu National Nature Reserve has covered 290 hectares and includes the cadastral area of Spišské Tomášovce. The educational trail in the Prielom Hornádu is open year-round, accessible from Čingov, and has 16 stops with 20 information panels. Unlike the footpath to Tomášovský výhľad, where trail markings and the terrain provide the main points of orientation, here the stops and panels shape the character of the route.

The hike to Sovia skala also has its own character: it is considered easy and comfortable, following good paths and trails. The steeper climb comes on the ascent to Sovia skala. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Čingov as a Nature and Accommodation Hub

Čingov is located within the cadastral areas of Smižany and Spišské Tomášovce, in the northern part of Slovenský raj National Park, which is under the third level of protection. The Čingov centre offers extensive accommodation and dining options, making year-round outdoor activities possible there. The centre is accessible from the Smižany and Spišské Tomášovce railway stops. Check current train connections before travelling by rail.

Architectural History and Places of Remembrance

The present-day Church of St Michael the Archangel was built in the first half of the 14th century in the Gothic style and extensively remodelled in the Classicist style in 1827. It is listed in the Slovak Register of Immovable National Cultural Monuments under number UZPF 799. The brick Chapel of the Holy Trinity, built in 1766, stands right next to it. The church and chapel represent different periods of construction and complement each other as two landmarks in the town’s history.

Another historical layer can be found in Čingov: a significant Slavic hillfort stood on the boundary between the present-day cadastral areas of Spišské Tomášovce and Smižany. Archaeological excavations uncovered several dozen dwellings and farm buildings there. The finds give the site an archaeological dimension distinct from the architectural history of the church.

The Kováčska vyhňa smithy and the sýpka granary are also part of the town’s history. Both were declared monuments by resolution no. 52 of the Spišská Nová Ves District National Committee Council on 22 March 1985. The smithy retains the remains of a brick oven or hearth. A remnant of Kúria Tyba survives in Spišské Tomášovce; it was the seat of the Andrássy counts and the Bartsch family. Only ruins remain today of the former Renaissance manor house in Hadušovce.

Traditions and more recent memorials also shape the area’s cultural identity. At Christmas, the visit of the Betlehemci in Spišské Tomášovce is a longstanding tradition. During Fašiangy, a procession is organised with spit-roasted meat and music. On 31 May 2026, the statue of the Hadušovský Spišský Kopijník was also unveiled. It commemorates the tradition of the Spiš communities of lancers and their knights.
