Odorín can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: Kostol sv. Mikuláša combines medieval origins with later alterations, while other historic buildings represent different architectural periods. There are also annual celebrations and the protected Markušovský Hríb sandstone formation. Visitors planning a stay around culture and local history can explore church architecture, secular buildings, local traditions and a protected geological site.

Church and Art Across Several Building Phases

Kostol sv. Mikuláša is a late Romanesque to early Gothic church, built in the 13th century, around 1270. Originally a single-nave church, it took on its two-nave form in the 1380s, when the nave was vaulted over a central column. The change from the original single-nave design to a two-nave space gives the church a clearly discernible architectural history.

The side chapel of Panny Márie Snežnej dates from 1807. Its cross-ribbed vault and arcades opening onto the nave define its architecture. The chapel’s Marian altar contains a late Gothic statue of the Madonna from 1460 to 1480. The statue therefore predates the chapel in which it stands by around three centuries. Together, the church and chapel bring different eras into focus through specific architectural and artistic details.

Further Architectural History in the Village

Zemianska kúria so sýpkou tells a different story of construction and use. It was built in the 18th century on older foundations and originally served as a manor house, with a grain storey on the upper floor. The building has been fully reconstructed. Alongside the religious buildings, it offers an example of a building with an explicitly secular function.

The Roman Catholic rectory stands opposite Kostol sv. Mikuláša. It was built on older Baroque foundations and remodelled in the Classicist style in 1826. Its location opposite the church adds a direct connection between the two buildings to the architectural comparison.

Local History, Nature and Traditions

The village’s history extends beyond its buildings: during the Cholera Uprising of 1831, Odorín was one of the centres. This connection adds a specific historical event to the architectural history. Markušovský Hríb offers a different natural attraction: a protected sandstone formation within the cadastral area of Odorín. It provides a natural history focus alongside the historic buildings.

Every year, Odorín celebrates a children’s carnival with masks and Turíce; for Turíce, the Pentecost festival, a maypole is erected. The two annual traditions take different forms: one is a masked children’s carnival, while the other is associated with Pentecost and the maypole-raising.

Beľušar is a recurring cultural and social event in Odorín; its eighth edition took place in 2025. At Beľušar on 28 June 2025, visitors could enjoy various specialities and goulash prepared for the event.
