Nature and culture come together for a stay in Hrabušice: Podlesok is a starting point for hikes into the ravines of Slovenský raj, a marked cycling route adds another activity option, and a church and castle ruins provide historical highlights.
Podlesok as a hiking starting point
Podlesok is a part of Hrabušice and a suitable starting point for hikes into the ravines of Slovenský raj. It lies at the mouth of the Suchá Belá ravine. Podlesok is also home to a field station and an information centre run by the Slovenský raj National Park administration. The SR10 Prielomom Hornádu – west circular route starts and ends in Podlesok, at the SAD bus stop and car park.
Ravines and waterfalls
The hiking trail through Prielom Hornádu has seven metal bridges and walkways, about 320 metres of chains along exposed rock faces, 140 climbing aids, and around 70 metres of wooden walkways. This technical equipment is a practical part of planning your hike. Check the climbing aids before setting out.
In the Suchá Belá ravine, the Misové vodopády are followed by the Okienkový vodopád; next come Korytový vodopád, Bočný vodopád, and Kaskáda. This sequence of five named waterfalls gives Suchá Belá a clearly defined natural feature.
A marked cycling route
Another activity option is the marked “Hrabušice, Majer – okruh” cycling route, which is 4.0 km long. Its length provides a clear way to assess the cycling route, while the technical features take centre stage on the hiking trail through Prielom Hornádu. This lets you compare a published route length with the specific features of a ravine trail.
Church and castle ruins
The St Lawrence Church in Hrabušice was originally a Romanesque church dating from the mid-13th century. Its Late Gothic winged altarpiece dates from 1516 to 1520 and includes sculptures from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. The Romanesque origins and the Late Gothic altarpiece represent two distinct periods. If you plan to include the church in your visit, check visiting arrangements in advance.
Castle ruins stand on the summit of Zelená hora near Hrabušice, in the Slovenský raj area. Today, only heavily damaged foundations and remnants of walls remain. The historical sites also differ in their state of preservation: on one side, a dated winged altarpiece; on the other, heavily damaged foundations and wall remnants.
