Mining history, hiking trails and winter sports come together in Hnilcik. The Banský skanzen Hnilčík includes a museum exhibition and four mining-themed educational trails, along with churches, circular hiking trails and the Mraznica ski and leisure sports centre. You can decide which of these aspects of the town will shape your stay based on the activities you have planned.

Forests, mountains and trails

The municipality of Hnilcik is heavily forested and mountainous. The area is part of the Slovenský raj recreational area. One prominent route for exploring the landscape is SR28 along the southern ridge of the Hnilecké vrchy: it starts in Hnilcik at an altitude of 650 metres and offers panoramic views across the varied landscape of the Spiš region. Check local conditions before setting out.

Discover mining history on foot

The Banský skanzen Hnilčík exhibition is housed in a former school building in the village of Jerohuta, near the municipal office. It covers the history of Hnilčík. If you would like to visit the exhibition, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.

The open-air mining museum has four mining-themed educational trails: A Roztoky, B Bindt, C Grétla and D Údolím Železného potoka. The trail on mining history is self-guided and designed for walking. Routes A and D are linear, while B and C are circular. The four routes can be combined into a circular route of about 22 kilometres, with more than 800 metres of elevation gain. You can choose from individual trails or a longer combined route.

The Roztoky route runs from the Hnilčík, Zajac bus stop through the Ráztoky Valley to the Ľudmila adit. The described route ends at the adit; if you would like to enter it, check access separately.

Circular hiking trails and cycling

Hnilcik offers three circular hiking trails with a total length of 14 kilometres. The 14 kilometres refers to the combined length of the three trails. Their destinations include a stone settlement, two viewpoints and a small via ferrata on Stangenberg-Hlinisko. The hiking network also includes a cycle route described as interesting and easy. You can choose between circular trails with different destinations and a cycling route, without confusing their respective distance figures.

Winter sports in Mraznica

The Mraznica ski and leisure sports centre has three ski lifts, a total of 3,000 metres of artificially snow-covered pistes and a longest run of 1,650 metres. The children's ski area has a conveyor belt, obstacles and a rope tow; ski instructors are also available. As facilities and lesson availability may change, check these details before planning your winter trip.

The Grajnár cross-country skiing area is accessible on foot from Mraznica, including from the top of the piste. Grooming and access may vary by season. If cross-country skiing is part of your plans, check conditions in advance.

Churches and more local history

The parish church “Farský kostol povýšenia sv. Kríža Kristovho” in Hnilcik was initially built as a wooden church in 1792. In Jerohuta, also known as Dolný Hnilčík, the branch church “Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie” began as a wooden bell tower in 1830. This church has a main altar with a statue of the Virgin Mary, created by the woodcarver František Repčík from Spišská Nová Ves.

The OBRI V RAJI nature experience park was built in a former quarry in Hnilcik.
