Nižná Myšľa lies at the transition between the Košice Basin and the Slanské vrchy. Three rivers meet here at the confluence of the Hornád, Olšava and Torysa. Skalka, an area for hiking and enjoying nature, lies above the Olšava on the eastern side of the village. The museum, monastery buildings and archaeological sites offer additional highlights for those interested in the history of the village.

Skalka, Hiking and Pilgrimage Route

Skalka offers views of the eastern Slovak countryside and is about 20 minutes from the village. The exact time may vary depending on the route. Another way to combine Nižná Myšľa with a longer hike is the annual “Prechod Slanskými vrchmi” event. It is organized by the municipal office and was first officially held on 17 January 1970. After a transfer from Nižná Myšľa in the direction of Slanec, the 15-kilometre route begins. It leads over Bradlo (840 m), Červený vrch and Koscelek, and back to Nižná Myšľa. Dates and event arrangements may change; check the details for the relevant year before taking part.

A pilgrimage route also passes through the village: since 2011, Cesta sv. Alžbety has connected Košice with Sárospatak (Blatný Potok). A mass is celebrated once a year at nearby Koscelek. These recurring religious traditions add another dimension to the village’s history alongside its archaeological and natural features.

Monastery, Museum and Chapels

The Myšľanské obecné múzeum is housed in a 13th-century monastery building. It showcases the region’s archaeological and cultural heritage, particularly finds from excavations at an archaeological site of European significance in the municipality of Nižná Myšľa. Underground passages made of stone and mortar have been preserved in the monastery; they are among the oldest parts of the original structure. There are also catacombs beneath the monastery building. A Prussian vault bearing the Jesuit symbol IHS survives from the former monastery chapel.

Other notable religious buildings include the present-day Church of St. Nicholas, a Baroque-Classical church built between 1802 and 1805. Below the church is the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, dating from the early 19th century. The Chapel of the Holy Family dates from around 1930; its architectural details include valuable doors with wrought-iron grilles. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, the oldest chapel in Nižná Myšľa, stands by the bridge over the Olšava. The Marian Chapel was built in 2000 on the road to Koscelek.

Bronze Age Archaeology

The Archeoskanzen Nižná Myšľa archaeological complex at the Várhegy site includes fortified settlements, a burial ground and replicas of houses from the Early and Middle Bronze Age. A functional replica of a monoxylon—a boat made from a single piece of wood—is on display at the Archeoskanzen. If you plan to see this exhibit, check its current status before travelling.
