The Malokarpatská vínna cesta (Small Carpathian Wine Route) brings together wine, landscape, history and gastronomy in an area that includes Svätý Jur, Pezinok and Modra. Its connecting thread extends beyond wine: historic buildings, ceramics, the Carpathian landscape and trails offer further perspectives on Pezinok and its surroundings.
Wine-Growing History and Tastings
The Malokarpatské Museum in Pezinok presents the history of wine-growing in the Little Carpathians and offers engaging wine tastings. Historical context and a hands-on wine experience come together under one roof. Booking conditions for tastings may change; check them before making your plans.
The wine-growing educational trail in Pezinok provides information about local wine, its history and how it is made. Wine tastings are also offered during Vinobranie, the grape harvest festival. You can explore the theme of wine-growing in different ways: by learning about wine and its production, and by tasting it.
Castles, Ceramics and History
Šimák Castle in Pezinok is surrounded by a park. Budmerický kaštieľ is also set in a park, described as an impressive English-style park. Its architectural features include a tall tower with a viewing gallery and a clock in the gable. Červený Kameň Castle, meanwhile, is notable for its long history as a family residence: it served this purpose for almost four hundred years.
Svätý Jur was granted the status of an urban monument reserve in 1990. The remains of the Neštich hillfort, dating from the Great Moravian period, have also been preserved there. The Svätojurský educational trail consists of an urban circuit and a nature circuit. The two names indicate different areas of focus, offering a way to choose between urban and nature themes.
Modra adds ceramics to these cultural discoveries. The Ignác Bizmayer Gallery is dedicated to the distinguished Slovak ceramic artist Ignác Bizmayer. At Slovenská ľudová majolika, the visitor program includes a guided tour and a pottery-wheel workshop. Booking arrangements may change; check them before making your plans.
Carpathian Landscapes and Trails
The Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area extends partly into the Pezinok District. The western part of the district lies in the Pezinské Karpaty section of the Little Carpathians. The Šúr Reserve contains the only habitat of its type in Central Europe with original alder forest. Pezinská Baba also shapes the area’s nature and recreation offering: it is one of Slovakia’s best-known winter ski areas; winter operations may vary by season.
Several themed trails offer different ways to explore the area. The fourth day of the Cyril and Methodius Route runs from Svätý Jur via Pezinok to Modra and is more than 22 kilometres long. The fifth day runs from Modra via Zochova chata to Červený Kameň Castle. The Veľká Homoľa lookout tower is open year-round and free to access; check access conditions before your visit.
Near Modra, the Harmónia recreation area connects to Piesok and is crisscrossed by hiking and cycling trails. The natural swimming pool near Zochova chata is in Modra–Piesok; its seasonal operation may vary. This means you can plan both routes through the landscape and seasonal activities, without needing every experience to follow the same theme.
