In Tŕnie, Gothic architecture and distinctive landscapes offer contrasting discoveries. St. Martin’s Church, historic buildings in the local districts and Padalo Waterfall each give your stay a different focus. There is also the Piesky viewpoint ridge and a small cave with a history as a place of refuge.

Gothic architecture and local history

St. Martin’s Church is a Gothic church. On the south side of the old nave is a richly moulded Gothic portal; a Gothic rib vault has been preserved in the sacristy. The church stands on a slight rise in the northwest of Tŕnie. It is in good condition and serves its religious purpose. Those interested in historic architecture will find two distinct Gothic features here: the portal on the exterior and the vault in the sacristy.

The written history of the village can also be dated: the oldest document referring to Tŕnie is a charter issued by King Ladislaus IV in 1285. The year therefore marks an early written record of the village’s history.

Further cultural monuments can be found in the local districts. The wooden bell tower in Kašová Lehôtka has two bells, one of which dates from 1667. There is also a wooden bell tower in Hrabiny; it is listed as an immovable cultural monument. Kašová Lehôtka is also home to a farmhouse with an outbuilding. The originally three-room building is used for recreation. The Chapel of St. Vendelin is another cultural landmark, as is the Trňan folk group, founded in 1971. Together, these examples show different facets of local heritage: religious buildings, rural architecture and folklore.

Landscapes between gorge and viewpoint ridge

Tŕnie lies in the Turovské predhorie subregion of the Kremnické vrchy. One striking natural feature is Padalo: the waterfall lies in a gorge that opens out at the northern edge of Tŕnie. Padalo is about twelve metres high and lies on andesite bedrock. The waterfall therefore offers a different perspective on the landscape from the Piesky ridge, which opens up wide views.

From Piesky, the view stretches west over almost the entire cadastral area of Železná Breznica. To the east, it takes in the area around Tŕnie and Turová, and further on, Zvolen, Sliač and other places. To help you get your bearings, consider the contrast: Piesky offers wide views over named areas and places; Padalo is a waterfall in a gorge, set on andesite bedrock.

A small cave in Farský jarok served as a place of refuge for local residents during the early settlement period. Access to it is considered difficult. It adds a history of human use to the landscape, but differs from the viewpoints and waterfall as a natural attraction.

Things to bear in mind when planning

An access description published on 17 February 2024 mentions chains to hold on to at difficult sections of the gorge. It also indicates a marked forest path leading to a point above the waterfall. The description reflects conditions at that time; water levels and winter weather can change conditions. So check local conditions before entering the gorge. This will help you choose cultural sites and landscape destinations according to your interests, without treating the viewpoint ridge, gorge and cave as interchangeable day-trip destinations.
