Očová’s attractions range from folk culture and crafts to church architecture and hiking trails towards the Poľana Mountains. The village offers concrete starting points for choosing what to focus on: you can explore regional history, learn about traditional craft techniques or discover trails through valleys and up to the ridge.

Crafts, Museum and Folk Culture

Remeselný dvor is located in the former Kováčov Mill, built in 1918; there was also a blacksmith’s workshop at the mill. Activities at Remeselný dvor include baking in a bread oven. The Očovské minimúzeum displays traditional festive and work clothing, footwear, household items and tools in two rooms. A memorial room dedicated to Matej Bel Funtík also opened there in March 2024. It presents his life, studies, work and scientific writings.

An exhibition in Očová showcases embroidery with a hooked needle, the making of fujara flutes and whistles, loom weaving, architecture, folk singing and folk dancing. Visitors to an exhibition in Očová can also sample Očovská Rožovka, a typical rye spirit. Crafts, everyday culture and local products are therefore the focus of various offerings, without combining them into a single visit programme.

Očovská folklórna hruda is a traditional folk culture festival held in Očová since 2004. The programme includes a craft fair, workshops led by master craftspeople, traditional local products and exhibitions; these are held mostly at Remeselný dvor. A monument to Ján Berky Mrenica stands in front of the cultural centre. It was unveiled on the tenth anniversary of his death.

Churches and Local History

The Roman Catholic church in Očová was built in the 14th century and fortified with a stone wall during the period of the Turkish threat. Its furnishings include an altar depicting the Death of the Virgin Mary, from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča and dated 1514–1515. The Evangelical church is a Neoclassical church of tolerance dating from 1785. After a fire in 1867, it was raised and a tower was added during repairs in 1868. It is one of Očová’s landmarks; visits must be arranged in advance by phone.

Poľana and Trails Through the Valleys

The eastern part of the municipality lies within the Poľana Protected Landscape Area. The Poľana Natura 2000 site also includes Očová’s cadastral area. Its varied landscape comprises different forest habitats, pastures and agricultural land. The Zadná Poľana National Nature Reserve also extends into Očová’s cadastral area.

A blue-marked hiking trail passes through Očová via the Hrochotská Valley towards Kyslinky. From there, it climbs in three directions towards the ridge of the Poľana Mountains. The green-marked trail runs through Očová below Poľana, continuing via Sudová and Trnavy through the Suchohradné Valley to Príslopy Saddle and descending to Kyslinky. The route descriptions also differ in their order: on the blue route, the ascent to the ridge follows Kyslinky, while on the green route, Kyslinky comes after the saddle. A short section of the red-marked Rudná Magistrála follows Očová’s eastern cadastral boundary; check current trail conditions before setting out.

Aviation and Practical Information

The Aeroklub Očová offers experience flights at Očová airfield. The aerobatic group Očovskí Bačovia has been active at the aeroclub since its founding in 1981. After releasing the tow ropes, it performs glider formations with smoke effects—offering a different perspective on local activities than a visit to the exhibitions or a hike.

There is a bus stop directly in front of Remeselný dvor, with services towards Zvolen, Dúbravy and Detva PPS. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable in advance.
