Babiná combines a protected historic settlement structure with opportunities for hiking and cycling. The village centre is a hub for hiking trails, particularly the Rudná magistrála; the cycling network offers an additional option. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Babiná, the village’s history, hiking trails and cycling opportunities can help you choose the focus of your stay.

Conservation Zone and Settlement Pattern

The Babiná Conservation Zone was designated on 25 September 2000. Its defining features are an organically clustered street-settlement pattern and an irregular layout. This makes the form of the settlement itself a cultural and historical subject, not just the history of individual buildings. The protected historic zone offers panoramic views, complemented by the surrounding landscape of the Štiavnické vrchy.

Building History Across Several Periods

One notable building is the traditional farmhouse, built in 1820. Its floor plan is U-shaped; farm buildings such as granaries, stables and a barn were added later. The shape of the house and the later agricultural additions can thus be considered as two distinct elements of its building history.

The Roman Catholic Church of St Matthew was built between 1242 and 1254 in the Romanesque style. Inside are a Romanesque stone baptismal font from the 13th century and a Gothic bell dating from 1358, bearing a Gothic inscription. The furnishings reflect different periods: like the church building, the font dates to the 13th century, while the bell is dated later.

A different period is represented by the archaeological site of Pod múrom in Babiná. Finds include pottery sherds and bronze objects from later prehistory. This archaeological point of interest adds prehistoric finds to the building history and is chronologically distinct from both the church and the traditional farmhouse.

Plan Your Visit on Foot or by Bike

The centre of Babiná is a hub for hiking trails, particularly the Rudná magistrála. Another aspect of the local hiking tradition is the annual traditional hike “Chotárom obce,” which follows forest paths and meadows, including in remote parts of the municipality. These two features complement each other: the hub places Babiná within the hiking trail network, while the hike follows a route through different types of landscape. If you would like to include the hike in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year.

For cycling, the PK microregion offers a planning resource of its own: a wooden information board beside the central children’s playground in Babiná displays the entire cycling network. It comprises three routes, marked in green, blue and yellow, connecting the municipalities of the microregion. Together, the three cycling routes are 36.30 kilometres long; this figure gives their total length, not the length of each individual route. When choosing between these activities, the difference is practical: for hiking, the hub and annual hike are the main reference points; for cycling, there are three colour-coded connections with a stated total length.
