Rumince lies in the Rimavská kotlina basin and in the valley of the Slaná River. The basin and river valley describe two geographical levels: Rumince’s location within the Rimavská kotlina and its position in the Slaná Valley. In the surrounding area, meadows, pastures and arable land alternate with woodland and scrubland. Open, agriculturally used areas thus lie alongside vegetated areas, bringing several types of landscape together in this rural setting. Kláštorný kopec marks the site of the original village of Rumince. This gives the geographical description a concrete connection to the settlement’s early history.

Church and Religious History

The Reformed Gothic church from the 15th century stands on the site of its predecessor. A church from the 13th century already stood at the present location; the current building dates from the 15th century. The church was renovated several times in the 18th and 19th centuries; a gallery was built in 1743. It also has a preserved historicist façade. Historicist refers to a design that draws on older forms, offering an additional perspective alongside the building’s Gothic classification. A gallery is a raised platform in the church interior.

Since 1521, the Reformed congregation in Rumince has been a mother church. The congregation thus adds an institutional perspective to the architectural history of the church building. The town’s cultural history also includes a musical detail from the past: in 1897, a choir with 35 members was founded in Rumince under the direction of teacher Jozef Varga.

Manor House and Architecture

Rumince is home to a late Baroque aristocratic manor house from the mid-18th century; it is in very poor condition. A manor house in Rumince has a portico with four columns, a tympanum at the top and an open loggia on its main façade. A portico is a porch supported by columns; the tympanum is part of the gable area. Together with the loggia, these elements structure the main façade. The history of the church’s construction and the layout of the manor house façade offer different ways to explore cultural heritage: one traces a sequence spanning centuries, while the other focuses on specific architectural elements on the main façade.

Recreation and Village Life

The village has a newly created park and a recreational area. Alongside its religious and architectural history, these bring a recreational aspect to the village’s profile. On 17 August 2024, a cooking competition was held in Rumince as part of the Village Days. The competition links a specific date in the village calendar with a culinary theme, adding local life to its cultural history. It is part of the more recent history of events; the church, manor house and landscape, by contrast, are longer-standing features of the village.
