Discover Kyjatice through its different layers of history: the Evangelical church preserves medieval frescoes and a wooden coffered ceiling dating from 1637; Kyjatické hračky represent a distinctive toy-making tradition. The Vŕšok Kyjatice educational trail offers a different focus, with specific information on its length and elevation gain. This gives you a choice between church art, cultural heritage and a trail experience when planning your visit.
The Evangelical Church and Its Furnishings
The Evangelical church in Kyjatice dates from the late 13th or early 14th century. Its frescoes were painted in two phases: the paintings in the presbytery and on the triumphal arch date from the late 14th century; those on the north wall of the nave were created in the first half of the 15th century. This sequence makes the different periods within a single church interior clear. The church also has a Renaissance wooden coffered ceiling with floral ornaments, dated to 1637. A coffered ceiling divides a surface into individual panels; in Kyjatice, floral decoration is added to this design. The church thus brings together medieval wall paintings and later Renaissance furnishings.
The chronology provides a thread for your visit: the building is older than the frescoes, and the ceiling dates from a later period still. The wall paintings and coffered ceiling can therefore be viewed as distinct historical layers rather than as a unified set of furnishings. Visitors interested in architecture can look at both the ceiling’s structure and the different locations of the frescoes within the interior.
The Gothic church can currently be visited. Visiting arrangements may vary, so check the options in advance.
Kyjatické hračky and the Kyjatice Culture
The Kyjatické hračky tradition included wooden horses on wheels with carts, wheelbarrows, cradles, children’s beds and various animal figures. On 19 December 2022, Kyjatické hračky were added to Slovakia’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Kyjatice culture has a different meaning: this archaeological culture, evidenced in the area above Kyjatice, was named after the place because of the intensity and quantity of the finds. It is dated approximately to the period from 1100 to 700 BC. The similar names refer to different subjects: Kyjatické hračky represent a toy-making tradition, while the Kyjatice culture is an archaeological classification dating to prehistoric times.
The Gothic Route and the Educational Trail
Kyjatice lies on the Gotická cesta tourist route. The Vŕšok Kyjatice educational trail is 1.2 km long, with an elevation gain of 70 m. These figures complement one another: the kilometres describe the length, while the metres indicate the elevation gain. Take both into account when deciding whether the route fits into your day’s plans. You can reach Kyjatice by bus and then continue on foot along a local road for 700 m in a northwesterly direction. Plan these two sections together and check local conditions in advance, as trail conditions may change.
