Jesenské offers two distinct themes to consider when planning your visit: hiking trails with a viewpoint, and architectural history reflected in the churches and historic landmarks around the village. The “Jeden strom” tower is a specific highlight for the first option.

Observation Tower and Hiking Routes

The “Jeden strom” observation tower was completed in June 2025 and stands 13 metres high. It is fully open to the public, and offers a 360-degree view from the top. On a clear day, you can also see the High Tatras. A short detour from the main trail leads to the tower, which is part of the hiking trail network in the Cerová vrchovina. The official route to the observation tower passes over Širkovský hradný kopec. A 3.75-kilometre route leads from the centre of Jesenské through a valley and an area inhabited by European ground squirrels to the tower.

For a longer option, the blue hiking trail 2644 starts at Jesenské railway station and runs through Širkovce, Širkovský hrad, Gemerské Dechtáre, Senná and Ragáč; it is 18 kilometres long in total. The difference between the 3.75-kilometre route to the observation tower and the 18-kilometre trail reflects two clearly different route lengths and itineraries.

Churches and Local History

The Roman Catholic Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary dates back to an originally Baroque building from 1737; it was damaged by a fire in 1825. The Reformed Church was built in 1898 in the Neoclassical style on the site of an earlier medieval church. The cemetery contains wooden post grave markers with finials bearing symbols of local production from around the turn of the 20th century. A monument commemorates the victims of the First and Second World Wars. Jesenské is also home to a Neoclassical manor house.

Landscape and Getting Around

One third of Jesenské lies within the NATURA 2000 bird protection area “Vtáčie chránené územie”. The southwestern part of the cadastral area borders the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area.

There are bilingual information and orientation boards in Slovak and Hungarian at nine locations; they are also intended to help tourists find their way around the municipality. The information centre sells tourist maps of Jesenské, the Rimavská Sobota District and the surrounding area, as well as a hiking map of the municipal cadastral area. The map selection therefore ranges from maps for getting around the village and its surroundings to a hiking map of the municipality.

The history of transport here includes the railway line through the Rimava Valley, which opened on 5 September 1874. Two events in 2026 are also specifically dated: the traditional “Stavanie mája” event took place in front of the Cultural Centre on 30 April; on 1 May, Jesenské hosted the ninth edition of the “Jarná cena Ceroviny” cycle race.
