Žíp combines a church complex listed as a national cultural monument with a manor house and park, as well as a preserved village layout. This range is useful when deciding on a trip: you can explore the village through individual buildings or include its settlement pattern and historic homes. Anyone interested in architecture and local history will find several scales to explore here—from details inside the church to the layout of the village.

Location and orientation

Žíp lies in the Rimavská kotlina basin on the left bank of the Blh River. The terrain is gently rolling, while the landscape as a whole is predominantly flat. The village is on the road between Rimavská Seč and Bátka and can be reached via a short turnoff from the main road. These road connections provide a concrete framework for route planning, while the riverbank and the Rimavská kotlina basin place the village in its landscape. This makes it possible to understand Žíp both as a place within a landscape and as a destination with a clearly specified road location.

Church, bell tower and Gotická cesta

The Reformed church is part of a church and bell tower complex listed as a national cultural monument. Beside the church stands a wooden bell tower with a shingle roof, dating from around 1750. Fragments of medieval wall paintings survive inside the church, on the interior walls of the presbytery and on the triumphal arch. Two distinct architectural and decorative elements therefore meet here: the freestanding wooden bell tower and the painted fragments inside the church. Žíp is also included on the Gotická cesta tourist route, providing additional context for understanding the village’s cultural significance.

Manor house and park

The Neoclassical manor house and park are jointly listed as a national cultural monument. The two-storey rectangular building has two wings and is set amid a park originally designed as a natural landscape park. The building and park thus form a single complex, but play different design roles: the manor house defines the built form, while the original concept of the park describes its landscape design. The manor house and adjacent park are currently in a dilapidated state. If you plan to visit both, check their condition before your visit.

Village layout and homes

Žíp has preserved the characteristic layout of a clustered street village to this day. This shifts the focus from an individual monument to the settlement as a whole. The building stock includes masonry houses dating from the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Some houses retain column-supported galleries on the courtyard side, as well as Late Neoclassical features on their façades. The galleries and façades show different architectural details; together with the characteristic layout, they complement the church and manor house by offering a glimpse into the architectural history of the homes.

Choose the right focus

If you are looking for a holiday rental for a trip to Žíp, you can include the village in your search as a destination with cultural attractions. When planning your trip, you can consider three perspectives: the church with its bell tower and wall-painting fragments, the manor house as part of a complex with a park, or the historic village structure and its homes. This can help you decide whether you would rather focus your trip on individual religious buildings, a building complex or the village as a whole.
