A cultural and historical discovery in Veľká Čalomija takes you from a Romanesque church and a medieval find to churches, memorial sites and a village museum. A military bunker and an amphitheatre are also among the local attractions. If you would like to plan sporting activities alongside your history visits, you will find paved and unpaved paths, as well as boat hire by prior arrangement.
Pustý kostol and a find from the Middle Ages
Pustý kostol is a single-nave Romanesque church with an apse facing east. Archaeological investigations date it to the first half of the 13th century. The site is in a small wooded area north of Veľká Čalomija. Information boards mark it on the main road and by the church; a prepared road leads there. Check local conditions before setting out.
Pustý kostol is also associated with a significant find: in 1947, a medieval bronze aquamanile depicting an armed horseman was discovered nearby. The object is housed in the Stredoslovenské múzeum in Banská Bystrica. The church and the artefact offer different insights into medieval heritage: one into the architecture of a religious building, the other into a portable object with a figurative depiction.
Churches, military history and memorial sites
The Roman Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary was built in 1911 in the Secession style. Its interior wall paintings have been restored; the original paintings were created by Gyula Ádám in 1932. The Evangelical church was built in 1934 to designs by a Czech architect, incorporating Hussite architectural elements. Those interested in architecture can observe different church styles and periods of construction.
A reinforced-concrete military bunker dating from 1937 recalls the former Czechoslovak border. It served to protect the border and was used as a light fortification during the Second World War. The bunker was reconstructed in 2021 and is currently open to visitors; check locally again before your visit to confirm access. Historical memorials also include the renovated grave of Polish soldier Andrzej Paruch in the municipal cemetery and memorial plaques commemorating Polish refugees from the Second World War.
Village museum and cultural events
The local village museum opened in 2009. It consists of a house with three rooms displaying antique furniture, traditional costumes, photographs, pictures and tools used by earlier generations. The collection complements the architectural and military history with objects from the everyday lives of past generations.
The museum grounds include a summer kitchen, a brick, vaulted root cellar, a shaft well, a pond, a courtyard oven and a shelter. The facilities are used for barbecues, entertainment or quiet relaxation. Another cultural venue is the local amphitheatre, with a covered stage and covered seating. Various cultural events are held there every year. If a particular event is important to your trip, check the dates in advance.
The Ipeľ and sporting activities
The Ipeľ flows through Veľká Čalomija and also forms the border with Hungary. Paved and unpaved paths in the municipality are suitable for sporting activities. Kayaks and canoes, along with the necessary equipment, can be hired by prior arrangement at the boat dock in Veľká Čalomija. If you plan to make use of this option, arrange it in advance.
There are several options to choose from: Pustý kostol and the aquamanile offer a window onto medieval history, while the churches, bunker and memorial plaques shed light on other chapters of local history. The village museum and amphitheatre add collections and cultural events to these themes; paths and boat hire offer a sporting addition to your stay.
