Stredné Plachtince lies on the eastern edge of the Hont region, along Plachtinský potok, which was formerly also called “Stará rieka.” A narrow strip of riparian woodland with willows, poplars and alders runs alongside the stream. The natural landscape and cultural history are equally part of the character of the village: the stream shapes its connection to the landscape, while the church, museum and traditional building styles reveal different historical themes.
Landscape and Pohanský vrch
Archaeological, cultural-historical and natural values come together at Pohanský vrch. The archaeological site lies along the Pohanský vrch educational trail. A trail to Pohanský vrch and the Hornoplachtinské lazy was established in 1998; the Pohanský vrch educational trail lies on the boundary between the cadastral areas of Horné Plachtince and Stredné Plachtince. The hill is also one of the ecologically significant gene-pool localities for flora and fauna. Heat-loving rock communities can be found near Hrobárovo and at Fojtíkovo and Chvíranovo bralo.
Church, Museum and Architectural History
The local Gothic Evangelical Church of St. Michael dates from the 14th to 15th centuries. A Gothic chapel is traditionally believed to have existed as early as 1332–1337. The church was renovated between 1610 and 1621; the altar area was built in 1626, and the nave with altar in 1742. Its 22-metre-high tower dates from 1832–1833. The church was altered in the Renaissance style in the 17th century and remodelled in the Neoclassical style in 1925. It is enclosed by a wall.
Next to the church are tombstones belonging to the Dačov family and a tombstone for the Evangelical pastor Samuel Godra (1807–1873), a poet and representative of the Slovak national movement. The Samuel Godra Museum is housed in the old parish house and provides an overview of the history of the Plachtina Valley from the earliest times to the present. Its collection includes geological specimens, sherds of the Bronze Age Kyjatice culture from the hillfort on Pohanský vrch, and other prehistoric and medieval finds. A weaving room contains machines and tools used to process flax and hemp from raw material to finished product.
The architectural heritage also includes the old Dačov manor house, later owned by the Bende family and remodelled in the 20th century, as well as folk houses from the 19th and early 20th centuries. They preserve traditional rural building styles, including plastered and whitewashed masonry and tiled roofs with half-hipped ends supported by wooden posts. The development of ecclesiastical architecture and the traditional rural building style thus stand side by side as distinct aspects of the village’s history.
Folklore and Traditional Foods
The local folk culture includes the making of Plachtince traditional costumes and embroidery, traditions that have been preserved to this day. The Bažalička folklore group preserves authentic folklore, local customs and traditions, as well as traditional dress. It regularly takes part in folklore events in the region, elsewhere in Slovakia and abroad.
On 16 June 2026, Plachtinský Keľavník was held as a traditional event in Stredné Plachtince. The programme included a storytelling walk in traditional costumes from Plachtince and activities that introduced the daily lives of ancestors and local customs.
Traditional foods are also part of the village’s cultural character. Traditional dishes include tenkeľová kaša, koláče, opekance and strudel, also known as záviny.
When choosing thematic highlights, Pohanský vrch and its ecological and archaeological significance can be set alongside the architectural and local history centred on the church, museum and historic houses. Folklore and traditional foods add further perspectives on customs and traditional everyday culture.
