Rimavská Sobota brings together two distinct highlights: cultural history with regional connections and leisure activities around Kurinec–Zelená voda. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Rimavská Sobota, you can plan your trip according to whether you would like to focus on the museum and architectural history or on swimming and outdoor activities.
Museum and the History of Gemer-Malohont
The Gemersko-malohontské múzeum has been housed in the former artillery barracks building since 1910. The neoclassical building was constructed in 1850 and is listed as a national cultural monument. The permanent exhibition opened to the public in its current form on 20 December 1979. It is designed to give visitors as comprehensive an insight as possible into the Gemer-Malohont region.
The museum also displays the Egyptian mummy Tasheritnetiak from Abusir el-Melek. It is one of five Egyptian mummies in Slovakia. The museum therefore offers both a regional exhibition focus and an exhibit connected with Egypt.
Architecture, Memorials and the Gothic Route
On Hlavné námestie stands the neoclassical Roman Catholic Church of St John the Baptist, built between 1774 and 1790. On Námestie Š. M. Daxnera, the Aleja významných dejateľov commemorates historical figures with connections to Gemer and Malohont. The memorial avenue was established in 2006; as of May 2018, it comprised 19 memorials.
The Gothic Route recommends starting at the Tourist Information Centre on Hlavné námestie and first visiting the sights of Rimavská Sobota. The Gemer-Rimava circular route of the Gothic Route leads from Rimavská Sobota to various sites and cultural monuments. This lets you distinguish between individual buildings and memorials in the town and a wider range of cultural attractions.
The Gemer-Malohont Fair in September showcases products made by local and regional craftspeople. These include woodcarvings and leatherwork, pottery, textiles with traditional embroidery, and bell-making. If you would like to include the fair in your trip, check the dates for your chosen year in advance.
