A Neoclassical bell tower dating from 1790, an evangelical church with a later altarpiece, and named hiking and cycling routes give Horné Zahorany a distinct cultural and scenic character. The municipality lies in the southeastern Slovak Ore Mountains, on both sides of the Veľký potok. For planning your trip, this offers a choice of architecture, literary history and activities on routes that pass through Horné Zahorany.

Church and Architecture

The Neoclassical evangelical church in Horné Zahorany was built between 1808 and 1814. Its hall has a segmental end and a flat plank ceiling. The Neoclassical altar with a portal design consists of four columns; in the centre is a painting of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, created by E. Putra in 1913. The construction period and the date of the painting mark different historical periods: the church was built in the early 19th century, and the central altarpiece was added later.

The Neoclassical bell tower is a landmark in its own right: it dates from 1790 and has a Baroque cupola. Horné Zahorany thus brings together different architectural features, without the tower and church being attributed to the same period of construction. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Check local visiting arrangements before your visit.

Ľudovít Kubáni and Local Remembrance

Horné Zahorany was the birthplace of the Slovak poet, prose writer and playwright Ľudovít Kubáni. A memorial plaque on the school building commemorates this connection: it features a relief of the writer. Alongside the religious buildings, literature and a specific biographical connection are also part of the village’s history. If you would like to focus on cultural themes during your stay, you will find two distinct points of interest here: the church’s architecture and the memory of Kubáni.

The Veľký potok and Routes Through the Municipality

The Veľký potok flows through Horné Zahorany, and the municipality lies on both sides of the stream. Its source is in the cadastral area of Horné Zahorany. The landscape also has clearly defined features: the highland’s relict surface consists of andesite, and oak forests are found only in the northern part.

The red hiking trail 0805 passes through Horné Zahorany. Another option is the “Cesta muránskej Venuše” route: one section runs from Rimavská Sobota through Nižná Pokoradz and Horné Zahorany. The two routes are described differently—one as a marked hiking trail, the other as part of a longer chain of places. When planning, you can therefore start by choosing the route whose course best suits your plans.

Several cycling circuits also pass through Horné Zahorany: “Gotický kostolík v Kraskove”, “Náučný chodník Drienčanského krasu”, “Magin hrad” and “Hradisko Drieňok”. Their names highlight different themes. This offers a practical guide when choosing, if you would rather focus on a named cycling circuit than a hiking trail. No information about duration or difficulty is implied.

Experiences at Rytierov Dvor

At the Rytierov Dvor farm in the cadastral area of Horné Zahorany, hands-on cooking courses are held right on the farm. Dates may change, so check which courses are available for your planned stay.

Fishing is also possible at one of the farm’s bodies of water at Rytierov Dvor. You should arrange participation with the farm in advance. You can also rent a horse there for a walk along a path among fallow deer and mouflons; availability depends on local arrangements. These activities are quite different from the municipality’s cultural and route-related attractions: they focus on experiences at the farm. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your stay, you can first decide whether you would like to explore Horné Zahorany mainly through its architectural history, its routes or these farm experiences.
