Blhovce lies on the left bank of the Gortva stream. From here, you can take easy walks in the surrounding countryside; a regional cycling route also passes through the municipality. Other attractions include the late Baroque Church of St Mary Magdalene and a statue of St John of Nepomuk dating from 1901. For trip planning, outdoor activities and the cultural history of the village offer distinct areas of interest.
Walks and Route Planning
Easy walks in the surrounding countryside are possible from Blhovce. For hikes with specific route guidance, there is map TM 141 “Cerová vrchovina – Lučenec”, which includes GPS-compatible hiking routes. The map is available from the Blhovce Municipal Office. Hiking routes include time estimates, updated in cooperation with the Slovak Tourists Club. GPS compatibility and time estimates answer two different planning questions: where a mapped route goes and what time the map gives for it. This helps distinguish a general walk from a hike with specific route guidance.
Protected Landscape Area and Geopark
The Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area includes the cadastral territory of Blhovce. The protected area has nine marked hiking trails, four nature trails and three educational sites. The geographical distinction matters when choosing a theme: walks are possible from Blhovce, while these figures refer to the protected landscape area. This makes it possible to distinguish the general opportunity for a walk in the village from the trails and educational offerings in the larger protected area.
Geological themes also add to the nature experience: the volcanic structures of the Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark can be used for educational purposes by a broad group of visitors. Alongside hiking, this offers a geological perspective and a different way to explore the landscape.
Cycling Route Through Blhovce
A regional cycling route runs from Hajnáčka through Blhovce and Hodejov to Jesenské. From Jesenské, it continues in the direction of Hostice and, before Hostice, to Gemerské Dechtáre. The final section runs below Ragáč through a Cerová forest and back to Hajnáčka. Blhovce is therefore part of a regional connection that passes through several named places and returns to Hajnáčka. If you plan to use this cycling route, check its condition and signage locally. Unlike the easy walks in the surrounding countryside, the cycling route can be understood as a regional itinerary by following its sequence of places.
Cultural History of the Village
In the centre of Blhovce stands a statue of St John of Nepomuk dating from 1901. The Church of St Mary Magdalene is late Baroque and was built from 1773 to 1777; it was extended in 1936. The dates distinguish the original construction phase from a later extension; the statue provides a separate point of reference from the intervening period. When placing the cultural history in chronological order, architecture and the monument can thus be considered as distinct aspects.
