Bátka’s history can be seen in two very different features: its Reformed church and the development of the settlement along the Balog. There is also a manor house with remains of an earlier park, as well as two ways to enjoy the outdoors: a cycling route that passes through Bátka and the VN Bátka reservoir, a fishing destination. Before your trip, you can use this information to decide whether you would like to discover Bátka mainly through its cultural heritage, settlement history or a specific activity.

Settlement and regional history

The original settlement of Bátka was on the right bank of the Balog River. Over the course of its history, it split into Dolná Bátka, Horná Bátka and Stredná Bátka. By the mid-19th century, Dolná Bátka and Horná Bátka had grown together into a single built-up settlement; in 1906, they were united as one village.

The religious history also has a regional dimension: in the 19th century, important events of the Reformed Church were held in Dolná Bátka and in part of Gemer. Important church events were held in this area in the 19th century. During the first 20 years of Czechoslovakia after the First World War, Bátka remained predominantly Hungarian-speaking; its residents were mainly engaged in agriculture.

The Reformed church: building history and façade

The 18th-century Reformed church is a local landmark in Bátka. Originally built in the Classicist style, it was first mentioned in 1808 and renovated in 1908. These dates mark different points in its building history: its first mention in 1808 and its renovation in 1908. The tower projects from the façade like a risalit and is topped with a pyramidal roof; other features include semicircular-headed windows and pilaster strips. Pilaster strips are shallow, vertical bands on a wall.

The church is in very good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. It is best to check its condition and whether visits are possible in advance.

Manor house and historic landscape

The Neoclassical manor house was built in 1895 on older foundations. It is a single-storey, two-winged U-shaped building with side wings. Remains of a park survive around the manor house; the park was destroyed by the village’s built-up area. Bátka’s agricultural and fruit-growing traditions are considered an asset for potential tourism development.

The landscape’s former use is also part of the village’s history: from spring until late autumn, Bátka’s residents used the land on the left bank of the Balog stream as pasture for their animals. This seasonal pattern describes a historic agricultural use and adds to the picture of the settlement’s history and architecture.

Cycling route and fishing destination

The BRM600 Poiplie x Gemer x Hont cycling route, published for the 2026 brevet, passes through Bátka. Check the route for later editions separately. For anglers, the VN Bátka reservoir near Bátka is a specific point of interest: it is among the waters most frequently visited by anglers in the Rimavská Sobota area. Alongside the historic buildings, these offer two different activity options to consider when planning your trip.
