If you’re looking for a holiday apartment in Abovce, you can plan your stay around two interests: architectural history and fishing. The village lies in the Slaná Valley; in addition to the river, the private Štrkovisko Abovce fishing pond is another fishing destination in the area. The historic buildings provide a second focus and offer a different perspective on Abovce.

Location and getting there

Abovce lies in the southern part of the Rimavská kotlina Basin, in the valley of the Slaná River. Road II/571 runs through the village. Railway line No. 160 between Zvolen and Košice also passes through Abovce, and the Abovce stop is on this line. The road and railway are useful reference points when planning your journey. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetables for your travel dates in advance.

Architectural history and churches

The Abafiovcov manor house is a single-storey, three-part Neoclassical building with Baroque elements. It stands on a rectangular ground plan and was built between 1800 and 1810. Neoclassical design and Baroque elements come together in this building; its three-part layout is another notable feature of its architecture.

The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a single-nave Neo-Gothic building. Its presbytery has a polygonal ending, and the projecting tower dates from 1907. The architectural form and period are distinctly different from those of the manor house: here, a Neo-Gothic church and an early 20th-century tower stand in contrast to a Neoclassical complex dating from 1800 to 1810.

An earlier church in Abovce was built in the late Middle Ages and mentioned in 1745. Buttresses and pointed-arch windows shape the church façades. Its medieval construction and the 1745 reference provide a different historical point of reference from the 1907 tower of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Together, these offer several chronological markers for exploring local architectural history.

Community events are also part of the annual calendar: several are organised in Abovce each year. If an event is important to your trip, check the dates for your planned stay.

Fishing on the Slaná and at Štrkovisko

Fishing in the Slaná River is highlighted in particular as a tourist activity. Štrkovisko Abovce, a private fishing pond, is a separate option. There is a specific procedure for visiting the pond: visitors should report to the manager; if needed, they can buy a fishing permit there. The keeper handles visitor information and reservations. Check the latest information before your visit, especially if you need a reservation or a fishing permit.

There is also a helpful direction marker: on the road from Rimavská Seč towards Abovce, a sign and a banner on the right point to Štrkovisko Abovce. When comparing fishing options, keep in mind the difference: for the private pond, reporting to the manager and the option to buy a fishing permit are specific visitor instructions; fishing in the Slaná is highlighted as a local tourist activity.
