Revúca brings together the history of the First Slovak Gymnasium with traces of Slovak literary and cultural history. There is also a lookout tower and trails with different focuses. When planning your visit, you can choose between walking tours of the town, historic sites and excursions in the surrounding area.

Gymnasium History and Walking Tours

The First Slovak Gymnasium in Revúca opened on 16 September 1862. The building houses the Museum of the First Slovak Gymnasium, which presents the school’s history from 1862 to 1874. Anyone interested in the history of Slovak education will find a tangible link here between the historic school building and the subject of the exhibition.

The museum offers long and short walking tours of Revúca. You must register for the tours at least three days in advance. Allow for this lead time when planning if you would like to get to know the town this way.

Literature and Historic Sites

The fairy-tale sculptures are located at sites connected with the town’s history. They depict scenes from literary works by fairy-tale writers Gustáv Reuss and Pavol Dobšinský. The works depicted are directly connected with Revúca or the Gemer region. The sculptures thus bring literary motifs together with specific historical links to the town.

The Evangelical parsonage is also part of this history: from the 1820s onwards, it became an important centre of the Slovak national revival movement in Gemer and Malohont. A plaque on its façade commemorates Samuel Reuss and his sons, the first collectors of Slovak folk tales; the plaque is designated a national cultural monument. Another plaque commemorates Pavol Emanuel Dobšinský and his work there as an Evangelical priest, folklorist, editor, poet, translator, teacher and playwright.

A Gothic church, built as early as the beginning of the 14th century, stands in the centre of Revúca. Its presbytery contains a late Gothic stone sacrament house with a wrought-iron grille dating from the 15th century. The church and the plaques at the parsonage illustrate different aspects of the town’s heritage: sacred architecture on the one hand, and Slovak cultural history connected with Revúca on the other.

Views and Trails

The lookout tower on Šturmanova hora offers views of Revúca, the peaks of the Slovak Ore Mountains and the entire Muráň Valley. One route leads from Strelnica along a 4.1-kilometre paved forest road. You can factor the route into your excursion plans.

Another route is the four-kilometre Gemerská zelená cesta. It starts at Revúca’s square, passes the railway station towards the former spa and follows embankments and engineering structures of the unfinished Gemer railway line. It is intended for pedestrians, cyclists, families with children and Nordic walkers. The two routes are almost the same length, but differ considerably in their course and focus: the route from Strelnica leads to the lookout tower, while the Gemerská zelená cesta starts in town and takes in the railway line’s structures.

Revúca is also a starting point for summer and winter excursions in Muránska planina National Park. For a digital exploration of the town, the online game Hviezdojed starts at the tourist information centre. Alongside the historic sites, excursions and a digital offering provide different ways to explore Revúca.
