Mokrá Lúka lies in the Muránska Valley below Kohút, in the southeastern part of the Slovenské Rudohorie. The village is situated on a floodplain and a terrace at the confluence of a stream that flows through Mokrá Lúka and joins the Muráň. This setting connects a specific local history with an equally tangible landscape of forest, spring and river. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can weigh up whether churches and historical traces, nature, or a combination of the two should influence your choice of location.

Churches and local history

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary dates from the first quarter of the 18th century and was originally baroque. Its rich baroque furnishings include a coffered ceiling decorated with ornaments and flowers, as well as an organ, an altar and a pulpit. The church is in good condition and continues to be used for religious purposes. Its construction date, furnishings and continued religious use offer different insights into the history of this place of worship.

The Evangelical Toleration Church was built in 1785 after Emperor Joseph II issued the Edict of Toleration. It is a national cultural monument and is located on the Gothic Route, whose historical heritage visitors can explore. In contrast to the originally baroque Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, it offers a different historical point of reference: its construction dates to the period after the Edict of Toleration was issued. Those interested in religious buildings will find two churches in Mokrá Lúka with different construction dates and historical contexts.

The village’s earlier working history is also tangible: in 1557, Mokrá Lúka had two iron forges and three smelting furnaces. These figures mark ironworking as a distinct strand of local history. Alongside the churches, the earlier processing of iron is also part of the village’s story.

Forest, water and landscape

Hvarná voda is a mountain spring in the forest above the mill. Its water is used as pleasantly flavoured drinking water; the spring is visited via well-trodden paths in both summer and winter. This connection with different seasons adds a specific natural attraction to the local history.

The surrounding forests also have a botanical interest: protected plant species include the Turk’s cap lily, broad-leaved marsh orchid, long-leaved helleborine, bird’s-nest orchid and mezereon. Together with the mountain spring, the forest setting thus has both botanical and water-related aspects. The village’s location at the confluence of the stream and the Muráň adds a river landscape.

Seasonal events and cycling

The Mokrenský bosorátsky jarmok takes place annually in the run-up to Christmas, usually around St Lucy’s Day. If the market is a key factor in your trip, check the dates for the relevant year in advance. Cycling is another option: construction of the Mokrá Lúka–Revúcka Lehota cycle path has been completed.

There are different seasonal highlights to consider when planning your trip: the spring is visited in both summer and winter, while the fair takes place in the run-up to Christmas. This means you can experience Mokrá Lúka through its nature and local history, or also through its seasonal market, depending on when you travel.
