Hucín lies in the eastern part of the Slovak Karst, on a terrace in the valley of the Muráň and Rybník streams. The village brings together medieval church history, traces of past work, protected trees, and a recommended cycling route. Cultural events are also held throughout the year. Depending on your interests, your stay may focus more on historic sites, cycling, or attending an event.

Church History and Local Heritage

The Reformed Church in Hucín dates from the first half of the 14th century. In the area of the church tower is a late Renaissance tombstone from 1681, bearing the coats of arms of the Giczei and Bessenyey families. These dates mark different periods in the village’s history: the church’s origins and a tombstone from several centuries later. If you are interested in architectural and local history, you can compare two historical periods here.

Pottery was also a former occupation of the local residents and is part of the village’s history. It adds a craft dimension to the architectural heritage. The former distillery is also part of the local heritage: it has been converted into a municipal museum. The former distillery building houses a permanent exhibition in the community center, featuring the municipality’s historical clothing and household items. Check current opening hours and visiting arrangements before you go.

The family manor house currently serves as a kindergarten and cultural center. The catacombs are another local attraction. If you plan to visit the catacombs, check access arrangements in advance.

Landscape and Nature

The floodplain in the western part of the municipality is wooded, while the south is characterized by a limestone hill landscape. Two distinct landscape forms can therefore be found side by side: the wooded floodplain in the west and the limestone hills in the south.

Next to the kindergarten are two protected horse chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) and one protected American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.). All three trees are listed in Slovakia’s register of protected trees. Their protection is justified on cultural and educational grounds, and they are significant scientifically, scenically, and aesthetically. This group of trees thus connects a specific place in the municipality with several reasons for protection.

Cycling Route and Hiking

Hucín lies on the recommended cycling route through South Gemer. Check the current signage before setting off. The Slovak Karst National Park offers a variety of hiking opportunities. You can therefore choose between different activities: the cycling route through South Gemer, which passes through Hucín, and the hiking opportunities in the national park.

Cultural Events Throughout the Year

Sports days are regularly held in Hucín in summer; check the current dates before planning a trip specifically for them. Celebrations related to the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 take place on 15 March. The tradition of St. Nicholas celebrations has also been revived. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the current program in advance. 15 March is a fixed date, while the exact dates of the sports days should be checked when planning.

Hucín offers several ways to shape your trip: church history and the municipal museum, protected trees, a cycling route, or cultural events. Which of these defines your stay depends on whether you are more interested in historic buildings, landscapes and activities, or a particular event date.
