Lučenec combines a distinctive historic centre with museums and expansive green spaces. If you would like to include culture and time outdoors in a getaway, you will find a range of options here: from the architecture around Kubínyiho Square and collections on the city’s history to paths through parks and woodland.
Historic Centre and Landmark Architecture
Kubínyiho Square forms the historic centre and conservation area of Lučenec. The historic buildings and original townhouses that have been preserved include two churches, the Reduta and the town hall. The synagogue makes its own architectural statement: Byzantine-Oriental elements meet Art Nouveau, while a monumental dome defines the interior. The building is a national cultural monument and part of Slovakia’s Jewish Heritage Route. Following its reconstruction, it opened to the public in May 2016 as a multicultural space; it is also used for cultural and social purposes. Check current visiting arrangements before planning an interior visit.
The Reformed Church is also in the historic centre, on the north side of Kubínyiho Square. Its Neo-Gothic tower is 64 metres high and was completed in 1896. The Reformed Christian Church in Slovakia, Lučenec congregation, took the building back under its administration in 2005; services are held there. If you would like to see the church interior, enquire about visiting arrangements in advance.
City History in Museums and Collections
The town hall, itself a national cultural monument, houses the Lučenec City Museum. Its permanent exhibitions explore various aspects of the city’s history: they cover the lives of the bourgeoisie, production in factories and by craftspeople, and schooling in earlier generations. They also look at living conditions in the first half of the 20th century and works by the painter František Gyurkovits. Social life, work and art are thus presented side by side, rather than reducing the city’s history to a single theme.
The Novohrad Museum and Gallery has been housed since 1985 in the listed former county court building in the historic centre. Its collection comprises more than 25,000 archaeological, ethnological, historical and gallery objects. These include folk ceramics, enamelware and historic glass; a particular focus of the museum is folk ceramics and glass. The Július Szabó Memorial House complements these museum sites with a look at the work of an individual artist. It was established in 2008 in the villa by the park where Július Szabó lived. Works dating through the 1960s, exploring different themes and using various techniques, are displayed there. As visiting arrangements can change, it is worth checking current opening hours before your visit.
Parks, Water and Routes
Lučenec City Park covers 17 hectares and is laid out in three garden styles. A hiking trail and two cycling routes run through the park, connecting it with the surrounding region. This adds a focus on green spaces to the city’s historic and museum attractions. The Ľadovo water reservoir lies on the Tuhárský potok stream in the cadastral area of the city of Lučenec. It covers 26.2 hectares and is used for recreation and sport fishing in summer.
Lesopark Lučenec offers two recreation zones and two cycling routes totalling 10.15 kilometres. One of the cycling routes includes a 360-metre educational trail with three stops and information boards. The city forest park has Nordic walking routes of 1.0 and 3.0 kilometres that people of all ages can try. The different lengths offer a practical guide if you would like to plan a shorter or longer route into your stay. Another route leads from the city park through Lučenec–Ľadovo Park and other places to Ipolytarnóc.
Planning Your Journey and Stay
At Lučenec railway station, assistance is available to and from the platform and to and from the trains. This includes help with boarding without prior registration. The station also offers step-free access and level access for wheelchair users. As these assistance and access arrangements may change, confirm them directly with the relevant provider before travelling. When choosing your accommodation, you can base your decision on the activities you have planned: historic architecture and museums sit alongside parks, cycling routes and the water reservoir here.
