Divín brings together several distinctive historic buildings and its connection to the nearby Ružiná Reservoir. The castle, manor house and church represent different chapters in the town’s history, while the museum, walking routes and activities on the water offer their own highlights for a stay.

Between the Castle, Manor House and Church

In 1559, the Hungarian Diet ordered the Castle of Divín to be repaired and converted into a fortress against the Ottomans. Zichy Manor House, a Renaissance building, was built later: Imrich III Balassa had it constructed in 1670. These dates refer to different buildings and construction projects. The manor house’s fortified design is distinguished by an almost square ground plan and four corner bastions.

The All Saints’ Church also tells the story of fortification. In 1657, the nave of the original Gothic church was extended. At the same time, the entire church precinct was enclosed by a defensive wall with inward-facing corner bastions. Divín’s castle, fortified Renaissance manor house and fortified church precinct thus stand alongside one another as different examples of historic architectural forms.

Museum and Cultural Themes

The Museum of the History of Divín is housed in Zichy Manor House. A presenter accompanies visitors on the tour, which includes short animations about Divín Castle in the 17th century and Zichy Manor House in the early 18th century. The two animations place the buildings in different historical periods.

The permanent exhibitions focus on Divín Castle, the history of the manor house and local history. Other topics include national cultural monuments, the nature of Divín and its surroundings, hunting trophies, tile art and mining. Workshop exhibitions add local pottery, woodcarving, stonemasonry and blacksmithing to the programme. The museum therefore covers topics ranging from architectural and local history to nature, crafts and other cultural themes.

The courtyard of Zichy Manor House is used for a variety of cultural and social events. This complements the museum’s focus on history with the manor house’s present-day use as an event venue.

Chapel, Feast Day and Details of the Townscape

The Chapel of Saint Anne stands in the cemetery on the south side of the castle hill, below the castle ruins and directly in front of the former castle gate. It is a distinct historic landmark on the castle hill. The chapel was granted indulgences in 1780; indulgence celebrations are still held there every year, usually on the weekend closest to Saint Anne’s feast day.

Inside are a Rococo altar with an oil painting of Joachim and Anne, and a vaulted ceiling fresco on the theme “Regnum Marianum.” It depicts Saint Stephen presenting the royal crown to the Virgin Mary. The Baroque rectory stands next to a church; its façade features a sundial with a chronostich, installed in 1761.

Ružiná Reservoir, Landscape and Walking Routes

Ružiná Reservoir lies within the cadastral areas of Divín and Ružiná. From the hill on which Divín Castle stands, there are views of the nearby reservoir and the surrounding countryside. The reservoir is used for sport and recreation and provides a nesting site for many protected waterbird species. It is designated as a non-trout fishing area.

The area also offers specific watersports: visitors can rent boats, windsurfing boards and other sports equipment at Ružiná Reservoir. Mount Javor offers a different landscape highlight. It lies within the cadastral area of Divín, rises 821 metres above sea level and is the highest mountain in the Lučenec District.

Two different route options are mentioned for walking: a red-marked hiking trail leads from Divín to Divín Castle, and a circular route also goes around the castle. These descriptions refer to different paths and should not be taken as a single route. They help visitors think of the castle either as a destination on a route from Divín or as a landmark on a circular walk.
