Discover Uňatín along its trails and through its history by the water: a self-guided educational trail leads from here via Horný Badín and Čabradský Vrbovok to Čabraď Castle; another runs through the meandering valley of the Krupinica to the “Uňatínsky mlyn” mill and returns to Uňatín as a circular route. There is also a restored folk house, a church dating from 1957 and community village traditions. When planning your visit, you can choose between a route leading to the castle, a mill loop and local history.
Valley, River and Trails
Uňatín lies in a shallow valley of the Čekovský stream, a tributary of the Krupinica. The mill route is also closely connected with the watercourse: it runs through the meandering valley of the Krupinica to the mill, then returns to Uňatín along a circular route. The Krupinica River valley is home to oak-hornbeam forests, springs and legally protected spring snowflakes. The natural setting thus encompasses both the waterscape and the forest and protected plant life.
The Krupina–Uňatín–Čabraď educational trail is self-guided, can be walked in either direction and is open year-round to pedestrians; most of it is also suitable for bicycles. From Uňatín, the route runs via Horný Badín and Čabradský Vrbovok to Čabraď Castle. Alternative access routes from Krupina and Bzovík meet in Uňatín, where the second section begins. This makes the village an important point on the route, whichever of the two access routes you choose.
The route to the castle and the loop to the mill differ mainly in their destination and layout: one leads to Čabraď Castle, while the other returns from the mill to Uňatín. The educational trail to the mill has four stops. Check the latest route information when planning your trip, as operational details may change.
Local History and Crafts
The restored folk house is open to the public; check local opening arrangements before your visit. It preserves an original clay oven, an earthen floor, historical furnishings, an old well and a bread oven. The “Uňatínsky mlyn” mill stands in the Krupinica floodplain and also has a historical bread oven in its courtyard. Another historical trace leads to Uňatín’s first mill: it was built on the Krupinica River and belonged to the Premonstratensian monastery in Bzovík.
Crafts are also part of the village’s history. In the first half of the 20th century, wooden utensils and baskets were made in Uňatín. The crafts of that time also included embroidery, Hont embroidery, bobbin lace and decorated Easter eggs. Above Uňatín stands the Roman Catholic Church of Christ the King, which dates from 1957. Together, the mill, folk house, church and craft traditions offer different ways to explore the village’s history.
Community Traditions
Vatra is a long-standing annual community gathering in Uňatín. Earth Day is also held annually; the tradition has continued for more than 20 years and includes a community litter-picking event around the village. The Maypole-raising tradition has been revived: together, people erect a maypole in the village centre. Each custom has a different focus—a community gathering, a group activity and a living tradition. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the exact dates in advance.
